Pete Rose is ineligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame. But the former Red's on-field fight with New York Mets shortstop Bud Harrelson in a 1973 playoff game is enough to get him into the Summit County (Ohio) Boxing Club Hall of Fame.
Rose will be inducted as an honorary member Aug. 10 in Akron after the nine-member board voted unanimously to endorse his candidacy.
Don Elbaum, who promoted fight cards in Akron and Cincinnati is part of the third class of honorees, invited Rose to attend. Rose belongs in a hall of fame, Elbaum said. If baseball is too ignorant, too narrow-minded to include him, let boxing do it.
