Reds first baseman Sean Casey was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after it was discovered he has a slight muscle tear in his right shoulder.
Newly acquired pitcher Brian Moehler will take Casey's spot on the Reds' roster.
Casey's injury was discovered in an examination by Dr. Stephen Pomeranz. A bone scan and MRI revealed a slight tear in the teres minor muscle.
Casey was relieved to find out the test results.
I tell you what, I was just hoping I wasn't crazy, he said. I'm glad they found that there was something in there.
Casey and Reds medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek met with general manager Jim Bowden during Tuesday's home game with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
We thought that was the best thing to do (the DL), to see if we can't get this better, Casey said.
Casey's shoulder will be treated with rest, exercise and a second cortisone shot. Surgery isn't an option.
The injury has bothered Casey since April. Lately, it has limited his ability to drive the ball and hit inside pitches.
