Rogers keeps Reds waiting

Texas pitcher asked more time to decide on trade

Kenny Rogers wanted one more day to make up his mind. The Texas Rangers left-hander told the Reds late Monday that he still hadn't decided whether to approve a trade to Cincinnati for three minor leaguers. He said he would have a decision today.

Rogers had a teleconference with his agent, Scott Boras, and the Rangers at 11:30 p.m.

“Unbelievable,” Rogers said. “It isn't supposed to be this hard.”

Rogers planned on talking to his wife again before deciding.

The Rangers agreed over the weekend to send Rogers to the Reds for minor leaguers David Espinosa, Josh Hall and Alan Moye. The hitch is Rogers has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Rogers has 72 hours to decide whether to waive the clause. The 72-hour window closes tonight.

Reds manager Bob Boone and players tried to lobby Rogers with little success.

“I don't think he's taking calls,” Boone said.

Rogers' teammate, first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, was lobbying the other way.

“I don't think it makes much sense for him to accept this trade,” Palmeiro said. “First of all, the labor situation is uncertain. Second, I'm not sure Cincinnati has what it takes to win the whole thing. With all of that going on, and him not wanting to leave, it's hard to make any decision. If it was Arizona or Atlanta or San Francisco, that's a team that has a more legitimate shot to win it all.”

Boone said he'll understand no matter which way Rogers decides.

“It's his no-trade,” Boone said. “If he decides one way, I'll think he's right. If he decides the other way, I'll think he's wrong.”

Rogers is scheduled to start for the Rangers tonight in Seattle. Boone said he hasn't decided where Rogers will go in the rotation if he accepts the trade.

Rogers, 37, is 10-5 with a 3.39 ERA this season. He is 142-103 in his career.
