Reds Notebook: Reitsma sent to bullpen

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Right-hander Chris Reitsma will work out of the bullpen through July 30. The Reds have off days Thursday and Monday.

“With off days, he's the one most conducive to going to the bullpen,” Boone said. “It really has nothing to do with him.”

Reitsma made seven appearances out of the bullpen last year.

“That's really the first time in my whole career I've done it,” Reitsma said. “I'll go out and do the best I can. Whatever situation he needs me in is fine with me.”

NO DATE: Reds player representative Aaron Boone said reports that the Players' Association has set Sept. 16 as a strike date are premature.

“I don't know anything about it,” the third baseman said. “That date was kicked around. Someone took it and ran with it. Maybe down the road, there will be some validity to it.”

FARM REPORT: Lance Davis returned to Triple-A Louisville and made a quality start Monday. The left-hander went six innings, allowing one run on two hits. He also walked one and struck out two in the Bats' 5-3 win over Durham.

At Double-A Chattanooga, right-hander Dave Gil pitched his second complete game of the year Sunday. He allowed only one run on four hits in the Lookouts' 4-1 win over Birmingham. Gil is 9-3 in 14 starts at Chattanooga.

GULLETT OUT: Reds pitching coach Don Gullett missed Monday's game after having hernia surgery earlier in the day. He's expected back today.

HYZDU HONORED: Moeller product Adam Hyzdu was named National League player of the week.

Hyzdu, who started in center field for the Pirates, hit .588 with three home runs and a league-leading 11 RBI last week.

His week was highlighted by his first career grand slam Friday and a four-hit, seven-RBI game Saturday, both against the St. Louis Cardinals.
