Giles: Dempster out of control
The Associated Press
Brian Giles tripled and homered off Ryan Dempster and explained why the Reds newcomer lost his third straight start since his trade from the Marlins.
He just didn't have control of his breaking stuff, the Pirates left fielder said. Anytime you can't throw that for strikes, you'd better be able to throw your fastball to spots. He left a few pitches over the plate.
Meanwhile, Pirates left-hander Jimmy Anderson (8-10) gave up three runs in six innings and beat the Reds for the second consecutive start. Last Wednesday in Pittsburgh, Anderson went seven innings in a 6-3 victory.
It was 6-3 when Anderson left for a pinch-hitter in the seventh, drained by the 92-degree heat and humidity.
It was definitely smoking out there, said Anderson, who threw 95 pitches. I started to get real tired. It got worse after the sun went down. I was glad we got that early lead. I could rest when we had a big inning.
After the Reds cut it to 6-5, Mike Williams pitched the ninth for his 30th save in 32 chances. The All-Star reliever became the fourth Pirate with 30 saves since 1969, when saves became an official statistic.
I was hoping I didn't have to see him when it was 6-1, Pittsburgh manager Lloyd McClendon said. He gets it done and he does it his way. Sometimes he scares the hell out of you, but there's no disputing the results.
Four Pirates had two hits apiece as Pittsburgh won for the sixth time in eight games.
The score could have been much more lopsided. The Pirates, who led the NL with a .377 average with the bases loaded coming in, left them full in two of the first five innings.
Giles' RBI triple and Aramis Ramirez's sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in the first. Former Red Pokey Reese, booed loudly again before each at-bat, had a sacrifice fly in the second.
Giles' 27th homer made it 4-1 in the third. Jack Wilson and Ramirez had RBI doubles in the fourth off knuckleballer Jared Fernandez for a 6-1 lead.
