Reds trying to acquire Rogers
The Associated Press
OAKLAND, Calif. The Reds tried Saturday to close a deal for Texas Rangers left-hander Kenny Rogers, but the pitcher was still deciding whether to approve the possible deal.
Kenny has a no-trade clause so it has to be up to Kenny, Rangers manager Jerry Narron said after meeting with Rogers on Saturday night. Having a pitcher of his quality would give any team a shot at contention. But he's got the final decision.
I think (the Rangers) know my preference, Rogers told the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I want to pitch here at home in Texas. But we'll see how the next 10 days go, see what they want to do. It's up to them to do what they want to do. I want to win here. ... But I would listen to what someone had to say.
The Reds, seeking to add pitching to boost a playoff run, would likely send a package of prospects to Texas.
Rogers, 37, makes $7.5 million in the last year of a three-year contract. He is 10-5 with a 3.39 ERA this season.
Cincinnati missed out on acquiring lefty Chuck Finley from Cleveland. Finley was dealt to the Cardinals on Friday.
Cincinnati trails St. Louis by 3 1/2 games in the NL Central. The Reds acquired Ryan Dempster from Florida on July 11 to bolster their pitching staff. But Dempster has struggled in two starts, going 0-2 with an 11.17 ERA.
