Dunn gets coaching on baserunning

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Reds manager Bob Boone talked to Adam Dunn about running the bases. No, he didn't scream at him.

“I don't think beating them up is the answer,” Boone said.

Dunn has made more than his share of baserunning blunders. He made one Friday night when he passed Todd Walker on the disputed non-home run call in the fifth inning. He made one Wednesday in Pittsburgh when he stopped between second and third af ter the ball got away from Pokey Reese after a Dunn steal. Dunn has a tendency to stop after his miscues.

This is Dunn's first full season in the major leagues and he played only 2 1/2 seasons in the minors.

What Boone doesn't want is the same mistakes repeated.

“Mistakes are teaching opportunities,” Boone said. “Without mistakes, there's not a lot of teaching for coaches and managers to do.”

Boone may have some more teaching to do. Dunn was picked off first base Saturday in the bottom of the fourth inning.

UMP APOLOGIZES: Boone said umpire Larry Young apologized for missing the call on Timo Perez's “catch” of Austin Kearns' ball that actually went off the wall.

“We lost because of it, no question,” Boone said. “But it's hard for me to get angry about it, because we should have run the bases better. And we should have grinded it out and won.”

BREAKTHROUGH: Friday's 2 1/3-inning outing by Scott Williamson was his longest of the year.

“He was lights out,” Boone said.

Williamson has worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings since the All-Star break. He has allowed only one hit and struck out seven in that span.

FERNANDEZ TO START: Jared Fernandez will remain in the fifth starter's spot for at least one more turn. Fernandez allowed three runs in five innings in the Reds' 4-2 loss to the Mets Friday.

FARM REPORT: Left-hander Ty Howington continued to struggle at Double-A Chattanooga. He allowed three runs on four hits in four innings in a 6-3 loss to Birmingham.
