Another doll for Davis' mantel

Ex-Reds great welcomed back

One bobblehead doll just wasn't enough for Eric Davis. The former Reds star, who retired after spending last season with the San Francisco Giants, added a second likeness to his collection Saturday while he was in town to throw out the first pitch for the Reds game against the Mets.

He already had a bobblehead of him wearing a Giants uniform. A Cinergy Field sell-out crowd showed up to claim his Reds bobblehead, and fans gave him a standing ovation when he threw the opening pitch to Barry Larkin.

“It looks like me,” he said of his new Reds bobblehead doll. “There's no big gut. Some of them are kind of big in the middle. But that one looks pretty much like me.”

Davis, 40, came in from the Los Angeles area, where he said he has spent his retirement relaxing and enjoying family life.

“One of my daughters plays varsity basketball, so I've been able to go to a lot of her games,” he said.

Baseball is not a big part of his life right now, but Davis said he has thought about returning to the game from the management side. He has no current plans to do so, however.

Davis, who hit the home run in Game 1 of the 1990 World Series against Oakland that propelled the Reds to a four-game sweep, said he doesn't miss the physical part of baseball.

“I just miss the guys, the camaraderie,” he said. “The actual day-to-day grind I certainly don't miss. I can still play. It just got to the point where I was tired of preparation.”

Davis said he would like to see the Reds “have some tradition” in the new Great American Ball Park, set to open next season.

“This is a great baseball town,” Davis said. “The fans are knowledgeable, and they appreciate you. They also let you know when you mess up.”

With a potential player strike looming before the end of the season, Davis said it is hard for him to watch baseball go through its various struggles.

Davis, the 1998 Comeback Player of the Year, battled injuries throughout his career and colon cancer in 1997. He played through chemotherapy treatments in 1998 with Baltimore.

“As an ex-player or just a regular player,” Davis said, “you hate to see it happen to the game. You hope it doesn't come to the point where the players go on strike or get locked out. You just hope it doesn't come to that point.”

Meanwhile, he'll take his new bobblehead doll back to Los Angeles and set it next to the others he has collected.

“I've got a Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal), a Kobe (Bryant), an Allen Iverson, a Willie McCovey — and a Marge,” he said jokingly. “A lot of people don't realize that Marge (Schott) put out a bobblehead.”
