MILWAUKEE Reds players will meet with union head Donald Fehr when they go to New York on July26-28 to play the Mets.
Fehr is trying to update all players on the status of labor negotiations.
Aaron Boone, the Reds' player representative, met with the team in Houston after the All-Star break.
I've tried to keep them informed, the third baseman said. But without them being at the meetings and being on the conference calls, it's tough to keep up.
The meeting with Fehr will give the Reds' rank and file a chance to ask questions and raise concerns.
It's very important that they attend, Boone said. They can make comments and inform themselves.
The Reds' next step would be to allow Boone to vote on their behalf in setting a strike date.
Boone attended the Players' Association meeting in Chicago during the All-Star break and came out of it optimistic.
I am optimistic in a different way, Boone said. I know our side is willing to negotiate on revenue sharing. Our side is willing to give a little on the issue and work with owners to find a good solution.
Owners want to increase the amount of shared revenue and put a 50 percent luxury tax on portions of payrolls above $98 million.
We're willing to compromise, Boone said. The other side of the story is: Are the owners willing to bargain? So far, they haven't.
