Louisville's Hudson just misses no-hitter

The Associated Press

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Luke Hudson and Scott MacRae combined for a one-hitter as the Louisville Bats shut out the Rochester Red Wings 6-0 Monday night.

Hudson (5-6) gave up the only hit in the fifth inning. It was a one-out single through the right side of the infield by Mike Moriarty. Just back from the Cincinnati Reds, Hudson walked two batters and struck out six in seven innings.

MacRae pitched two perfect innings, with two strikeouts.

Rochester loaded the bases with no one out in the first inning on a walk, Hudson's throwing error and a hit batsman. But the 25-year-old right-hander retired Darryl Brinkley on a foul pop up, struck out Luis De Los Santos and put out Luis Garcia on a fly ball.

Louisville jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against losing pitcher Jay Spurgeon (4-9). Kevin Witt singled for his International League-leading 73rd run batted in. The second run scored on an error by third baseman Eddy Garabito.

The Bats scored another unearned run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Frye. They broke the game open in the sixth on a single by Jesse Levis and a two-run double by Gerald Williams.
