Youngest All-Star was Simpson, not Bench or Dunn
Enquirer staff
When Adam Dunn was named to this year's National League All-Star team, it was reported that he was the youngest Reds All-Star since Johnny Bench in 1970. Bench, like Dunn, was 22.
But a Reds fan called the Enquirer with the following information, and he was right: The youngest Reds All-Star prior to Bench was pitcher Wayne Simpson, also in 1970, who was a full year younger than Bench.
At that year's All-Star break, rookie Simpson was 13-1 with a 2.69 ERA. But July 31, he tore his rotator cuff and, after several surgeries and comebacks, he retired with a career record of 34-31.
