Reds Chatter
Enquirer staff and news services
Trade winds: The Reds' acquisition of pitcher Ryan Dempster last week made us think of some other July deals they've made in the past:
July 19th, 2001 Outielder Alex Ochoa traded to Colorado for second baseman Todd Walker and outfielder Robin Jennings.
July 20, 2001 Outfielder Michael Tucker traded to the Cubs for minor- league pitchers Ben Shaffar and Chris Booker.
July 12, 2000 Pitcher Denny Neagle and outfielder Mike Frank traded to Yankees for infielder Drew Henson, outfielder Jackson Melian and pitchers Brian Reith and Ed Yarnall.
July 31, 1999 Pitchers B.J. Ryan and Jacobo Sequea traded to Baltimore for pitcher Juan Guzman.
July 4, 1998 Relief pitcher Jeff Shaw traded to Los Angeles for infielder Paul Konerko and pitcher Dennys Reyes.
July 31, 1997 Pitcher John Smiley and infielder Jeff Branson traded to Cleveland for pitchers Danny Graves, Jim Crowell and Scott Winchester and infielder Damian Jackson.
July 21, 1995 Outfielder Deion Sanders, pitchers John Roper, Scott Service and Ricky Pickett, and first baseman Dave McCarthy traded to San Francisco for pitchers Dave Burba, and Mark Portugal and outfielder Darren Lewis.
July 31, 1995 C.J. Nitkowski and Dave Tuttle and player to be named (Mark Lewis)to Detroit for pitcher David Wells.
Aaron a boon: So maybe Bob Boone was right to keep playing his son. Aaron entered the weekend on pace to hit 24 homers with 85 RBI, 74 runs scored and 24 stolen bases. All, by the way, would be career highs. When he went 3-for-5 with a home run Friday night, it was his third straight multi-hit game and third straight in which he hit a home run. Boone entered Saturday having hit in 15 of his past 17 games with five home runs and 16 RBI.
The Reds are in need of some big second halves from key players. Here's a look at how some of them performed last season after the All-Star Break. Sean Casey hit .284 with three homers and 28 RBI. But he's a career .309 hitter after the break. Ken Griffey Jr. hit .304 with 18 homers and 53 RBI. That sure would look good again. Barry Larkin missed the entire second half but is a career .309 hitter after the break. Boone is a career .298 hitter after the break.
The week ahead

The skinny: This is another chance for the Reds to right the ship. This week's opponents entered Saturday a combined 34 games under .500. St. Louis, meanwhile, plays two against Los Angeles, two against San Francisco and three against Pittsburgh.
