Cinergy Countdown #19 - Sept. 7, 1993

Big day for Whiten

By John Erardi, jerardi@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

In the greatest one-game hitting display in Riverfront/Cinergy history, the St. Louis Cardinals' Mark Whiten smashed four home runs and drove in 12 runs, both tying major-league records. It occurred in the second game of a doubleheader.

Whiten, 26 at the time, was as surprised as anyone, saying: “I can't explain it. Sometimes it takes me a month just to get 12.

        “I am amazed by this.”

The Cards gave him the royal treatment after the game, lining up their red travel bags from the clubhouse entrance all the way to his cubicle and when he entered, they chanted, bats raised overhead: “Hard-hittin' Mark Whiten!”

Who gave up Whiten's fourth HR? Rob Dibble.

And, whose record for RBI did Whiten tie? Sunny Jim Bottomley, in 1924. Whose record for 4 HR did he tie? Numerous - at the time, 11 others - including Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, Mike Schmidt and Rocky Colavito.

Footnote: It was not a good doubleheader for Reds pitchers' ERAs.

They allowed 28 runs, 28 hits and 13 walks, but the Reds split the twinbill, winning the first game, 14-13 in 3 hours, 14 minutes.

Because Whiten was driving in runs in big gulps, the nightcap lasted only 2 hours and 17 minutes, making it all the more of a blur for Whiten. The Cards won, 15-2.
