The Associated Press
TORONTO Chris Carpenter pitched seven sharp innings, and Eric Hinske went 4-for-4 to lead the Toronto Blue Jays over the Boston Red Sox 4-1 Saturday.
Carlos Delgado, Josh Phelps and Hinske hit RBI doubles for the Blue Jays, who have won two in a row against Boston after losing 11 consecutive games to the Red Sox this season.
Carpenter (2-1), making his seventh start of the season, allowed just four hits. The 27-year-old right-hander spent two stints on the disabled list this season with tendinitis in his shoulder. He struck out six and walked three in his first start at SkyDome this year.
Tigers 5, White Sox 3, 1st game
Tigers 3, White Sox 1, 2nd game
DETROIT Bobby Higginson hit a two-run homer as Detroit completed their first doubleheader sweep in nearly nine years.
Carlos Pena hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning and drove in three runs to lift the Tigers to a victory in the first game. It was Detroit's first doubleheader sweep since Sept. 26, 1993, at Baltimore.
Higginson's third-inning homer, which came after Damion Easley walked with two outs, was his sixth of the season. It came off Chicago starter Rocky Biddle (1-2), who lasted just 4 1-3 innings.
Mike Maroth (2-3) struck out seven in seven-plus innings, allowing one run and five hits. In the opener, reliever Fernando Rodney (1-2) got his first major league victory despite allowing the tying run in the eighth.
Devil Rays 4, Mariners 3, 10 innings
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Ben Grieve singled through a drawn-in infield with the bases loaded in the 10th inning as Tampa Bay snapped an eight-game losing streak with a victory over Seattle.
Ichiro Suzuki homered twice in a game for the first time for Seattle, going deep on the first pitch of the game and hitting another solo shot off Tanyon Sturtze in the third inning.
The Devil Rays loaded the bases in the 10th inning against John Halama (4-3) on Carlos Guillen's fielding error, Aubrey Huff's single and an intentional walk. Grieve lined a 2-0 pitch between first and second base and Steve Cox easily beat Suzuki's throw.
Esteban Yan (5-4) pitched the 10th to get the victory for Tampa Bay, which hadn't won since beating the Florida Marlins on June 30.
Royals 4, Angels 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. Paul Byrd pitched a three-hitter for his second shutout of the season and Carlos Beltran homered to lead Kansas City past Anaheim.
Byrd (12-6) retired the last 13 Angels batters to tie for the AL lead in wins. Beltran also singled, doubled and drove in two runs as Kansas City won for just the second time in nine games.
Mike Sweeney had two RBIs for the Royals, who snapped Anaheim's five-game winning streak.
Byrd, who was making his first start since the All-Star break, already has more victories in any season by a Royals pitcher since Tim Belcher won 14 games in 1998.
Athletics 6, Orioles 0
BALTIMORE Barry Zito pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Miguel Tejada hit a three-run homer as Oakland cruised to its fourth straight victory.
Olmedo Saenz also homered and Jermaine Dye had three hits for the A's, who have outscored Baltimore 11-1 in the four-game series that concludes Sunday.
Zito (12-3) struck out three, walked three and allowed only one runner past second base to tie for the AL lead in wins.
Zito was the third straight Oakland starter in this series to pitch seven shutout innings, following Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson.
Yankees 14, Indians 5
CLEVELAND Jorge Posada hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs, and Alfonso Soriano had two home runs and four RBIs to power New York Yankees over Cleveland.
Soriano hit the second pitch of the game by Ryan Drese (8-7) into the left-field bleachers for his 21st homer. He added a three-run shot off Drese on an 0-2 count during a seven-run second.
Posada hit his second grand slam of the season and fifth of his career to highlight a five-run fifth off reliever Jake Westbrook. He also had a two-run double in New York's big second inning.
David Wells (10-5) won his third straight start despite giving up a season-high 11 hits over seven innings.
Rangers 8, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS Alex Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs, Rafael Palmeiro had four RBIs and Kenny Rogers extended his dominance of Minnesota as Texas cruised to a victory.
Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a bases-loaded double in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Palmeiro had a pair of two-run doubles that came in consecutive innings.
Rogers (10-5) gave up one run and five hits in seven innings to improve to 7-1 against the Twins since 1995. He walked four and struck out four as the Rangers snapped a four-game losing streak.
