Reds call up Larson, Gonzalez
Call it moving day. Along with a four-player trade, the Reds today called up third baseman Brandon Larson and outfielder Raul Gonzalez from Louisville, returned pitcher Luke Hudson to Triple A and waived pitchers Seth Etherton and Brian Reith.
The moves at a glance:
Called up from Louisville
Brandon Larson: The Reds are hoping the 3B is the Adam Dunn of this year. Makes the bench much stronger because of his pop (24 home runs, 68 RBI, .667 slugging percentage at Louisville). Also can spell Aaron Boone and Barry Larkin, with Boone going to short.
Raul Gonzalez: Gives Reds good speed and a good bat off the bench. Hitting .328 with 71 runs scored for Louisville. Could be gone when Ken Griffey Jr. returns. Made major-league debut for Reds last year, hitting .214 in 14 at-bats.
Sent back to Louisville
Luke Hudson: Was impressive in two outings with the Reds. The 25-year-old right-hander has tremendous stuff. Needs to develop consistency. Probably will be back in the big leagues before the season is over.
Waived, claimed by Yankees
Seth Etherton: Has been in a state of perpetual rehab since the Reds got him from the Angels before last season. Had shoulder surgery last spring. Hasn't gotten his velocity back and has been roughed up in the minors (0-1, 8.22 ERA in five starts at Louisville). His roster spot goes to Larson.
Waived, claimed by Phillies
Brian Reith: The 24-year-old right-hander made eight starts for the Reds last year. Went 0-7 with a 7.81 ERA. Part of the Denny Neagle trade with the Yankees in 2000. Wasn't getting it done at Louisville this year (6-7, 4.74).
