Adam Dunn was in the minors this time last year, dreaming of a call-up. Sunday night, the Reds outfielder boarded a plane to Milwaukee for the major league All-Star Game.
The 12 months in between were evidently eventful.
It's just been an absolute whirlwind, Dunn said.
Dunn was called up July 20, 2001. He has played in 151 games between last year and today, so here's a look at what's nearly his first full season: .283 batting average, 36 home runs and 97 RBI. The homer and RBI totals lead the Reds over that span, as do his 116 walks.
Dunn will be 22 years, 8 months old Tuesday, making him the youngest player on either All-Star roster.
I really didn't think about that (being the youngest player) until you just said it, Dunn said. That's a great honor.
Dunn set a National League rookie record with 12 homers in a month last August. What he said he's proud of is how he adjusted after pitchers established the book on how to pitch him.
This is a game of adjustments, Dunn said. If you can't make the adjustments, you're not going to be up here very long.
Dunn said he has secured five tickets for family members who will be attending the game Tuesday.
