Reds chatter

Some observations from the stat sheet as the Reds move toward the All-Star break (entering Friday):

        • The Reds score an average of 4.17 runs per game and allow an average of 4.57.

        • The Reds' team ERA of 4.00 was sixth in the NL. The starters ERA was 4.33, while the bullpen's was 3.46.

        • Adam Dunn and Juan Encarnacion have combined for 32 homers, 41 percent of the team total.

        • Dunn's 75 walks represent one fourth of the team's total.

        • Reliever Gabe White has inherited 32 runners, only four of whom have scored.

        • Danny Graves has seven intentional walks, six unintentional.

        • Pitchers struck out 492 batters, second-lowest total in the NL. They've walked 277, seventh fewest.

        • Reds catchers have thrown out 42 percent of runners attempting to steal, second-best in the league. Jason LaRue threw out 16 of the first 32 to run on him.

        • The Reds have stolen 53 bases, fifth-most in the NL.

        • Their 57 sacrifice hits are second-most in the league.

        • Reds batters' 582 strikeouts are fifth-most in the NL.

        • Average home attendance of 22,552 is 21st highest in the major leagues. Their road average of 29,140 is ninth highest.

        • The average of 8.9 runs scored per game at Cinergy Field is the 17th-highest total in baseball.

        • The Reds are 36-4 when leading after seven innings and 4-32 when trailing after seven.

        • The Reds scored fewer than three runs in 23 of their 84 games, winning only one of them.

        • The Reds are 16-10 in one-run games and 6-3 in extra-inning games.

        • The Reds were hitting .221 with runners in scoring position.

        • Sean Casey, Dunn and Todd Walker lead the Reds with 23 multi-hit games each. Juan Encarnacion leads the team with eight three-hit games.

        • The Reds' longest winnings streak is seven; longest losing streak is eight.

        • Reds by series: Won 14, lost 12, tied 1. They swept four series and were swept in two.

        A star, too

If baseball had a rookie All-Star game the way the NBA does, Austin Kearns would be the key for the NL team.

Kearns entered Saturday leading all NL rookies in home runs (8), extra-base hits (21), doubles (12), RBI (29), on-base percentage (.395) and slugging percentage (.473).

        Recognize these guys?

Two former Reds are integral parts of the Braves' major-league best bullpen.

Chris Hammond, who was on the 1990 championship team and was out of baseball from 1999-2000, is 6-2 with a 1.64 ERA.

        Mike Remlinger, a Red from 1995-98, is 6-0 with a 1.51 ERA.

        The stretch ahead

The Reds will resume play against the NL Central after the three-day All-Star break.

The Reds will play 17 straight games against teams who are currently under .500, beginning with an eight-game road trip to Houston (4), Milwaukee (2) and Pittsburgh (2). The Reds then come home for three against the New York Mets and three against the Pirates, followed by three games against the Mets in New York.

The Reds entered Saturday 26-13 against teams under .500, 18-27 against teams over.
