NL roundup
The Associated Press
ATLANTA Carlos Zambrano pitched five innings of two-hit ball and Moises Alou hit two homers as Chicago beat Atlanta in Bruce Kimm's first game as Chicago's interim manager.
Sammy Sosa missed his second straight game because of a family emergency, and he's not expected back for Sunday's series finale.
Alou finished 4-for-4, the 18th four-hit game of his career. He also had four hits last Saturday against the White Sox.
Zambrano (1-1) was making just his second start of the season, and the powerful right-hander baffled the Braves with a fastball in the mid-90s and breaking balls in the dirt.
The Cubs jumped on All-Star Tom Glavine (11-4) with three runs in the first. Glavine lasted just four innings and gave up five runs on five hits, including a home run apiece to Alou and Bellhorn.
Marlins 5, Mets 2
MIAMI Michael Tejera won his fourth consecutive start as Florida beat New York.
Tejera (5-1) allowed five hits and two runs in a career-high 7 1-3 innings. He left to a standing ovation after giving up a two-run home run to Roberto Alomar in the eighth inning.
The Mets struck out 10 times, including the last five outs.
Walks continued to be a problem for Shawn Estes (3-7). He allowed four runs on four hits and six walks, giving him four or more walks in five of his last seven starts.
Expos 5, Phillies 3
PHILADELPHIA Brad Wilkerson homered for the third straight game, and Fernando Tatis and Andres Galarraga also hit home runs to lift Montreal over Philadelphia.
The Expos, winners of three straight and four of five, have outhomered their opponents 20-9 during a 12-game road trip. The Phillies, who left 13 runners on base, have lost four of their last five.
Javier Vazquez (6-5) was pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits, tied a season-high with four walks and struck out three.
Rockies 3, Padres 2
DENVER Todd Zeile got his 1,000th RBI and John Thomson won for the first time in eight starts as Colorado edged San Diego.
Zeile, who went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double, broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out single in the third inning. Larry Walker went 2-for-4 and raised his NL-best batting average to .351.
Thomson (7-7), who hadn't won since beating the Padres on May 23, gave up six hits and two first-inning runs.
Astros 10, Pirates 2
PITTSBURGH Daryle Ward hit the first homer to travel into the river beyond PNC Park's right-field wall on the fly, a grand slam that was one of three Houston homers in a 10-2 rout of Pittsburgh.
Lance Berkman took over the major league lead with his 29th home run as he and Jeff Bagwell homered in succession off Kip Wells (9-6) in a three-run fourth inning.
Ward's drive in the fifth inning easily cleared the right-field stands and splashed down several feet beyond the concrete wall alongside the Allegheny River, which runs parallel to the grandstands.
A man in a pleasure boat parked beyond the wall dove into the water and retrieved the ball, which carried an estimated 479 feet.
