NEW YORK — Steve Parris earned his first victory of the season and the Toronto Blue Jays ended their six-game losing streak by defeating the New York Yankees, 8-3 Saturday.

        Parris (1-2), making his fifth start since returning from rotator cuff surgery, held the Yankees to four hits over the first seven innings, two singles each by Nick Johnson and Robin Ventura. He walked two and struck out four.

        Andy Pettitte (2-3) lasted just 3 1-3 innings in his fifth start since returning from the disabled list. He allowed six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

        Red Sox 8, Tigers 0

        BOSTON — Pedro Martinez won his fourth start in a row as the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers.

        He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out eight in five innings.

        Martinez (11-2) was chosen by New York Yankees manager Joe Torre for the All-Star game Tuesday in Milwaukee but declined the invitation to rest and take care of personal matters. He'll have more than a week off before his next scheduled start July 14 at Toronto.

        Doug Mirabelli hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning against Mike Maroth (1-3) and Trot Nixon added a solo shot.

        White Sox 7, Indians 3

        CHICAGO — Jeff Liefer, starting in place of struggling Frank Thomas, hit a three-run homer and All-Star Mark Buehrle got his 12th win Saturday as the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians.

        After Jason Phillips (0-1) walked Magglio Ordonez and hit Paul Konerko with a pitch, Liefer hit his second homer to break a 2-all tie in the sixth.

        Liefer was making his second straight start in place of Thomas, who was in an 0-for-16 slump that had dropped his average to .239. Before his homer to deep right center, Liefer was in a funk of his own with just four hits in his previous 25 at-bats.

        Buehrle (12-6) gave up eight hits and two runs over seven innings. Ellis Burks homered off Antonio Osuna in the eighth.

        Royals 4, Athletics 3

        OAKLAND, Calif. — Michael Tucker hit a homer that turned into a single because of a baserunning mistake, but still drove in the winning run as the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics.

        Joe Randa singled to left to lead off the 10th off Billy Koch (5-1). An out later, Tucker's hit sailed over the fence in dead center, but he passed pinch-runner Mike Caruso between first and second. Caruso thought the ball was caught by A's center fielder Terrence Long, who made a leaping stab at the hit, and turned back toward first. Tucker got an RBI single, was out on the way to second and only one run scored.

        Scott Mullen (1-2) pitched the ninth for his first big league win as the Royals snapped a three-game winning streak. Brad Voyles pitched the 10th for his first major league save.

        Orioles 7, Rangers 5

        ARLINGTON, Texas — Melvin Mora hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple in the ninth inning and Baltimore ended Texas' four-game winning streak.

        With the game tied 4-all, Geronimo Gil led off the ninth with a single off Colby Lewis (1-1). After Lewis hit Mike Bordick with a pitch, Mora drove in pinch-runner Jerry Hairston and Bordick with his drive to the wall in right-center.

        Texas' Carl Everett homered for the first time since April 25.

        Twins 7, Mariners 2

        SEATTLE — Kyle Lohse pitched six scoreless innings and Minnesota got home runs from David Ortiz, Matthew LeCroy and Torii Hunter to beat Seattle.

        Ortiz's homer in the second ended Seattle starter Jamie Moyer's scoreless innings string at 24 1-3 innings, 10 shy of the team record set by Mark Langston in 1988.

        Both benches and bullpens emptied onto the field at the start of the fourth when Moyer (8-4) hit Ortiz in the backside with a pitch. It was in apparent retaliation to the Mariners' Bret Boone being hit by a pitch by Lohse above the left elbow in the third. No punches were thrown and no players were ejected.

        Angels 4, Devil Rays 3

        ANAHEIM, Calif. — Darin Erstad hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning and Tim Salmon hit a two-run homer for Anaheim's only hit in the first six innings as the Angels beat Tampa Bay, extending the Devil Rays' club-record road losing streak to 10 games.

        Scott Schoeneweis (7-6) pitched a perfect eighth for his first victory in three appearances since being demoted to the bullpen June 28.

        John Lackey, who replaced Schoeneweis in the Angels' rotation, gave up two runs and seven hits in seven innings. The right-hander has allowed six earned runs over 20 innings in his three starts with the Angels.
