Barry Larkin isn't thinking about milestones. I'm just trying to get on base, man, he said.
When Larkin got on base in the first inning Friday night, it was with his 390th career double. That moved him past Dave Concepcion into second on the Reds' all-time list, behind Pete Rose (601).
Larkin also homered (his 100th in Riverfront/Cinergy), beat out an infield hit and scored three runs.
I think I'll look back on those things when I'm done, Larkin said of the milestones. They'll be nice chapters when the book is finished.
Larkin's big night came after he was given an off day.
I think it helps, Reds manager Bob Boone said. I saw a more live bat. I don't know if it's coincidence. I think sometimes the mental break helps.
Larkin agrees that regular rest can help.
I felt fresher tonight, he said. I think the occasional day off helps.
Larkin's three-hit game Friday was only his third of the year. It raised his average to .246. He's 9-for-16 over his last four games.
Hopefully, I'm starting to get consistent, Larkin said. I've had it for a couple games, then lost it.
