Dunn becomes Reds' youngest All-Star

Slugger, 22, only Cincinnati player selected

The Cincinnati Enquirer

ST. LOUIS — Sometimes, the way to determine good players is by the company they keep in the record book. On Sunday, outfielder Adam Dunn, at 22 years, 8 months, became the youngest Red to make an All-Star team since Johnny Bench made the 1970 team at 22 years, 7 months.

VOTE ONLINE
There is still one spot open on each team to be determined by fan voting on the Internet over the next two days at MLB.com and ESPN.com. Each manager picked five players for fans to choose from:
NL: St. Louis' Albert Pujols, San Diego's Ryan Klesko, Colorado's Larry Walker, Pittsburgh's Brian Giles and Atlanta's Andruw Jones.
AL: Cleveland's Jim Thome, Oakland's Eric Chavez, Boston's Johnny Damon, Anaheim's Darin Erstad and Chicago's Magglio Ordonez.
This comes a year after Dunn hit the most home runs (19) by a Reds rookie since Vada Pinson (20 in 1958) and the most by a Reds first-year player since Frank Robinson (38 in 1956).

Dunn was the only Red picked to play for the National League in the July9 game in Milwaukee. The announcement came on the day he went 0-for-6 in the Reds' 12-8 victory over the St.Louis Cardinals.

        “Yeah, I'm an 0-for-6 All-Star,” Dunn said.

Said Reds manager Bob Boone: “He's deserving.”

Dunn wasn't so sure. He thought closer Danny Graves and right-hander Elmer Dessens had a better shot.

But Dunn is hitting .305 with 15 home runs and a team-leading 48 RBI. He is second in the majors in both walks and on-base percentage to San Francisco's Barry Bonds.

Dunn is the youngest player selected to the team in either league.

“It's a great honor,” he said. “I'm very happy. It's the ultimate in our sport.”

This is Dunn's first full season in the majors. He wasn't promoted to the big leagues until July 20 of last year. Dunn was at the 2001 All-Star Game last year, but he played for the USA Team in the Future Stars game.

Dunn hit .266 with 19 home runs and 43 RBI after his promotion. He set a NL record for most homers in a month with 12 in August.

Dunn had planned to spend the break in Houston.

“I'll bring my parents and my brothers to Milwaukee,” he said. “It's going to be a lot of fun.”

Dunn was able to laugh about his 0-for-6 Sunday because the Reds won.

“Everybody did something expect me,” he said. “That's the way this team has been. Everybody contributes.”
