Reds chatter
Stars in your eyes
Enquirer staff and news services
With the NL and AL All-Star teams being announced tonight, here are some Reds All-Star notes:
Despite leading the NL Central for 51 days, the Reds will likely have only one representative. Only Ken Griffey Jr. showed up in the voting at any point.
That wasn't always the case.
In 1975, five Reds were voted into the starting lineup. Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, George Foster and Dave Concepcion started the game and Ken Griffey and Tony Perez were also selected for the team.
From 1967 to 1985, those seven players made 58 appearances in the All-Star game, and five times produced the game's most valuable player (Perez in 1967, Morgan in '72, Foster in '76, Griffey '80 and Concepcion in '82.
The appearances: Rose (16), Bench (12), Morgan (8), Concepcion and Perez (7), Foster (5) and Griffey (3).
Today's stars
The Reds have six players who have appeared in the All-Star game:
Sean Casey 1999, 2001
Danny Graves 2000
Barry Larkin 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000
Ken Griffey Jr. 1990 through 2000
Scott Williamson 1999
Jose Rijo 1994
You call that clutch?
The Reds entered the St. Louis series last in the major leagues in hitting with runners in scoring position (.213, 143-672). In their last 13 games before Friday they hit .120 (12-for-100) with RISP, including one 0-for-26 stretch.
Road to the break
The Reds would appear to have a slight advantage over St. Louis in their remaining games before the All-Star break. While Houston and Milwaukee are both well under .500, the Dodgers entered the weekend with the best record in the NL.
What a difference a year makes dept.
The Reds, by the way, were 33-54, in sixth place, 18 1/2 games out of first place at last year's All-Star break.
