Cinergy Moment No. 21. - June 16, 1978
Tom Seaver pitched the only no-hitter of his glittering career, a 4-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was in control throughout, including the ninth when he walked leadoff hitter Jerry Mumphrey, got Lou Brock to fly out, Garry Templeton to force out and George Hendrick to ground out weakly to first baseman Dan Driessen.
Tom was a horse, former Reds manager Sparky Anderson said recently from his home in California. It was good to see him get that one the only one in his career after being so close on so many other occasions.
The Reds had acquired Seaver in a trade on June 15, 1977. To the Mets, the Reds sent Pat Zachry, Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson and Dan Norman. In return, the Reds got Tom Terrific, who went 14-3 for them that season.
He never did win 20 in Cincinnati, but he assembled some wonderful seasons. In the strike-shortened 1981 season, he was 14-2 with a 2.55 ERA. In 1979, he was 16-6. Overall for the Reds, he was 75-46 with a 3.18 ERA (1977-82).
