White cleared for Cardinals series

CHICAGO The Reds will have a left-handed reliever in St.Louis after all.
Gabe White, out since Saturday with an infection in his pitching hand, has been cleared to pitch. There was a good chance White could have ended up on the disabled list.
He threw (Wednesday), Reds general manager Jim Bowden said. He's been cleared medically. He'll join the team Friday in St.Louis.
Bowden said White is available to pitch. It's up to pitching coach Don Gullett and manager Bob Boone how White's used.
Having White in St.Louis is key, because the Cardinals have a strong left-handed-hitting lineup. White is 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA, and left-handed hitters are hitting .156 off him.
White's availability won't influence whether left-hander Bruce Chen or right-hander Luis Pineda starts Sunday.
Right now, I'm leaning toward Pineda, Boone said.
