Castillo extends hit streak to 35 games
The Associated Press
MIAMI Luis Castillo singled in the third inning Friday night to extend his hitting streak to 35 games, tying Ty Cobb and two others for the 10th longest all-time.
Castillo's streak is the longest by a Latin player, surpassing Benito Santiago's 34-game streak in 1987. Castillo already owns the longest streak by a second baseman, surpassing Rogers Hornsby's 33-game streak in 1922.
Leading off the third, the Florida Marlins switch-hitter drilled a 2-0 pitch back at right-handed knuckleballer Steve Sparks. It ricocheted off Sparks' glove and landed between the mound and second base. There was no throw. The hit was Castillo's 61st and 18th infield single during the streak.
Castillo grounded out in his first at-bat.
Two other players had one-season streaks of 35 games Cobb (1917) and Fred Clarke (1895). George Sisler also had a 35-game hitting streak, but it spanned two seasons (1924-25).
Only nine players have had a longer streak, including just two since 1950 Pete Rose (44) in 1978 and Paul Molitor (39) in 1987. Joe DiMaggio set the record of 56 games in 1941.
