Interleague roundup
The Associated Press
Sadness in St. Louis, a scintillating achievement in Florida.
Grieving Cardinals fans bid goodbye to Jack Buck on Thursday, and Marlins fans cheered Luis Castillo as he extended his hitting streak to 34 games breaking Rogers Hornsby's record for a second baseman.
Castillo slashed a single in the first inning of Florida's 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians, a game called after 5 1/2 innings because of rain.
This guy has been unbelievable, Marlins catcher Mike Redmond said. I couldn't imagine playing in 34 games in a row.
While an announced crowd of only 8,045 turned out to watch Castillo chase history, an estimated 10,000 mourners filed past Buck's casket near home plate at Busch Stadium.
The longtime broadcaster was honored before the Cardinals lost 3-2 to the Anaheim Angels.
The organization made it such a well-done day, said catcher Mike Matheny, one of the speakers at the memorial service. Everybody in here was kind of choked up by the whole thing.
In other interleague games, it was: Boston 5, San Diego 0; Arizona 5, Baltimore 1; Colorado 14, the New York Yankees 11 in 10 innings; Atlanta 3, Detroit 2; the Chicago White Sox 6, Philadelphia 1; Texas 7, the Chicago Cubs 4; San Francisco 10, Tampa Bay 2; Oakland 5, Pittsburgh 3; Montreal 5, Kansas City 4 in 11 innings; the New York Mets 3, Minnesota 2; Seattle 3, Cincinnati 2; and Los Angeles 2, Toronto 1.
Houston beat Milwaukee 9-3 in the only NL game.
A.J. Burnett (8-5) and the Marlins completed a three-game sweep of Cleveland in the first meeting between the teams since the 1997 World Series, also won by Florida.
Castillo tied Dom DiMaggio and three other players at 34 games. The Dominican leadoff hitter also matched Benito Santiago's record for the longest streak by a player born outside the United States.
Only 10 players have had a longer streak than Castillo, including just two since 1950 Pete Rose (44) in 1978 and Paul Molitor (39) in 1987.
When I'm finished, I'll feel good for what I did, Castillo said.
Scott Schoeneweis (6-5) and the Angels ended a four-game losing skid and halted the Cardinals' five-game winning streak. Troy Percival stranded two runners in the ninth for his 15th save.
The Cardinals held a 4 1/2-hour viewing for Buck beginning more than seven hours before the game, with fans filing past the broadcaster's cherry wood casket just behind home plate. Buck's son, Joe, led the memorial service that also featured speeches by Stan Musial, Lou Brock, manager Tony La Russa, broadcaster Mike Shannon and former announcing cohort Dan Dierdorf.
He was such an incredible man in so many ways, La Russa said.
Elsewhere, four aces with 17 Cy Young Awards among them were all on the mound. Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez won with dominant performances, but Roger Clemens and Greg Maddux left early with injuries.
Rockies 14, Yankees 11, 10 innings
DENVER Todd Zeile hit a three-run homer off Steve Karsay (3-3) in the 10th inning, and Colorado outslugged New York to close the highest-scoring three-game series in Coors Field history.
The two teams combined for 70 runs, 85 hits and 15 home runs in three games. Denny Stark (4-1) allowed one hit in one inning.
Todd Hollandsworth hit a grand slam as the Rockies overcame an 8-2 deficit, rallying after Roger Clemens was hit in the right forearm by a line drive and forced to leave in the fifth. X-rays proved negative.
Robin Ventura homered in his third straight game, Jason Giambi homered and drove in four runs for New York, which won 20-10 Wednesday night after taking the opener 10-5.
Rangers 7, Cubs 4
CHICAGO Former Cub Rafael Palmeiro hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, and one out later Kevin Mench added his second of the game for Texas.
Playing at Wrigley Field for the first time since the Cubs traded him away in 1988, Palmeiro homered in all three games of the series. His decisive homer Thursday came off Juan Cruz (1-9).
Todd Greene and Mench with his first homer of the game connected back to back off Matt Clement in the seventh.
Anthony Telford (1-0) won in relief despite allowing a three-run homer to Alex Gonzalez that tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh. Francisco Cordero got his second save.
White Sox 6, Phillies 1
PHILADELPHIA Chicago's Mark Buehrle pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning, and Paul Konerko made it easy by hitting a three-run homer in the first.
Buehrle (10-5) blanked Philadelphia on four hits before giving up consecutive doubles to Doug Glanville and Bobby Abreu. Buehrle struck out five and walked two in 8 1-3 innings.
He got all the runs he needed in the first, when Konerko connected off Robert Person (2-4) for his 14th homer.
Giants 10, Devil Rays 2
SAN FRANCISCO Marvin Benard had season-highs of four hits and four runs, and Rich Aurilia had four RBIs for the Giants.
Russ Ortiz (6-4) gave up two unearned runs on a first-inning homer by Ben Grieve on six hits over eight innings.
Tanyon Sturtze (0-8) now owns the longest losing streak in the majors after allowing seven runs on 13 hits in 5 1-3 innings.
Diamondbacks 5, Orioles 1
PHOENIX Randy Johnson struck out 11 and got an assist from the Arizona offense just in time to record his 11th victory.
The Diamondbacks sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the seventh inning. Erubiel Durazo, who pinch hit for Johnson, drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk off Willis Roberts, who relieved Rodrigo Lopez (6-3).
Arizona tied it a 1-1 against Lopez when Alex Cintron walked with bases loaded.
Craig Counsell had sacrifice fly, Quinton McCracken a run-scoring single and Luis Gonzalez a sacrifice in support of Johnson (11-2).
The Diamondbacks trailed 1-0 after Melvin Mora homered on the third pitch of the game.
Red Sox 5, Padres 0
SAN DIEGO Pedro Martinez struck out 11 and gave up just two hits in eight innings as Boston beat San Diego.
Martinez (8-2) was coming off losses to Atlanta and Arizona, the first time he'd lost consecutive starts since September 1998.
He fanned his first five batters and also struck out the side in the fifth inning. After allowing Mark Kotsay's one-out single in the third, the right-hander retired his last 17 batters.
Martinez also scored on Johnny Damon's two-run triple for the Red Sox, who lead the majors with nine shutouts. Nomar Garciaparra hit a two-run triple in the ninth and finished with three RBIs. Rickey Henderson scored three times.
Scheduled starter Bobby Jones was pushed back due to tendinitis in his right elbow, and Padres rookie Kevin Pickford (0-2) lasted only 4 2-3 innings.
Dodgers 2, Blue Jays 1
LOS ANGELES Odalis Perez pitched five-hit ball into the eighth inning to win his fourth straight decision as Los Angeles beat Toronto.
Perez (8-3) lowered his ERA to 2.52, third-lowest in the majors behind Atlanta's Tom Glavine (1.71) and Boston's Derek Lowe (1.85).
Toronto lost for the seventh time in eight games.
Esteban Loaiza (3-4) matched zeros with Perez for three innings before the Dodgers broke through in the fourth with two-out RBI singles by Adrian Beltre and Alex Cora.
Eric Gagne earned his major league-leading 25th save in 26 attempts.
Marlins 3, Indians 0, 5 1/2 innings, rain
MIAMI Luis Castillo extended his hitting streak to 34 games, breaking Rogers Hornsby's 1922 record for a second baseman.
Castillo also scored the first run to help the Marlins complete a three-game sweep in a game called in the bottom of the sixth inning. A.J. Burnett (8-5) allowed two hits, extending his shutout streak to 18 consecutive innings, and Mike Lowell homered for Florida.
Athletics 5, Pirates 3
PITTSBURGH Jermaine Dye drove in four runs with a homer and a bases-loaded double to support Tim Hudson's effective pitching, and Oakland completed a three-game sweep.
Hudson (5-6) shook off Jason Kendall's first career leadoff homer to limit the Pirates to two runs and five hits over eight innings.
The Pirates loaded the bases in the ninth off closer Billy Koch and got a run, but Koch struck out Kendall for his 18th save.
Kris Benson (0-4) took the loss as the Pirates dropped their sixth in seven games.
Mets 3, Twins 2
NEW YORK Steve Trachsel retired his first 19 batters and took a shutout into the ninth inning for New York.
Mike Piazza hit a solo homer off Tony Fiore (5-2), which landed in Torii Hunter's glove before going over the fence in the sixth, and Edgardo Alfonzo added a two-run shot in the eighth.
That was all the support Trachsel (5-6) needed as he flirted with ending the Mets' 41-year no-hit jinx until Cristian Guzman singled with one out in the seventh for Minnesota's first baserunner.
Armando Benitez got two outs for his 17th save, giving up a two-run double to Corey Koskie before retiring Hunter with runners at second and third to end it.
Braves 3, Tigers 2
ATLANTA Javy Lopez drove home the winning run with a two-out single as Atlanta rallied for three runs in the ninth inning.
Adam Bernero pitched eight scoreless innings for Detroit. He was lifted after giving up Julio Franco's leadoff double in the ninth. But Juan Acevedo (1-3) couldn't preserve the lead.
Greg Maddux had to leave after the fifth because of lingering pain in his left calf, and Kerry Ligtenberg (1-3) got the victory.
After Maddux left, the Tigers broke through for their only runs in the sixth against Chris Hammond, victimized by three Atlanta errors in the inning.
Expos 5, Royals 4, 11 innings
MONTREAL Vladimir Guerrero scored on a throwing error by pitcher Scott Mullen (0-2) in the 11th inning, and the Expos extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games.
The Expos are on their best roll since winning 10 straight from June 6-16, 1997.
The Royals lost their season-
high seventh straight when Joey Eischen (1-1) pitched a perfect 11th. After Kansas City overcame a three-run deficit with four two-out runs in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead, Montreal tied it on Fernando Tatis' homer off Roberto Hernandez in the ninth.
