Gullett finds Chen's problem

Pitching coach Don Gullett thinks he detected the problem that was making newly-acquired lefty Bruce Chen ineffective.
Chen, who came to the Reds Friday in a trade from Montreal, is going from side to side in his delivery rather than finishing toward the plate.
There's always a reason that baseball does what it does, Gullett said. (The delivery) was affecting the action on the ball.
Chen said Gullett's message clicked rather quickly.
I did some of the things he told me, Chen said. I thought it was going to feel awkward. But it didn't. I think we'll see the results. It was very encouraging.
Gullett saw the flaw while watching tapes of Chen pitch. The problem is very similar to one Elmer Dessens fell into earlier in the year. Dessens has been on a roll since Gullett had a similar session with him.
Gullett will work with Chen one more time before his next start. Because of that, the Reds moved Chen's start to Saturday after considering him for a Thursday start. Chen, who turns 25 today, is a pitcher Gullett wanted.
He got to the big leagues early, Gullett said. He had some success in the Atlanta organization. Most left-handers mature later. A lot of people have seen good things in him. It's up to him to apply. He's a great kid. He understands what we tell him. He's eager to work.
