Sosa's 475th ties Musial, Stargell
The Associated Press
CHICAGO Sammy Sosa hit his major league-leading 25th home run, and Todd Hundley homered twice Friday as the Cubs beat the White Sox 8-4 in the first game of the season for city bragging rights.
The homer was No. 475 for Sosa, tying him with Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 19th on the career list.
Matt Clement (5-4) gave up three runs and five hits in 7 2-3 innings.
Paul Konerko provided all of the offense for the White Sox, hitting a pair of two-run homers. It was his second multihomer game this week.
White Sox right-hander Jon Garland (6-5), the Cubs' No. 1 pick in 1997, didn't fare too well against his old team, allowing five runs and seven hits in just four innings.
Athletics 3, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO Tim Hudson ended the longest losing streak of his career with seven innings of seven-hit ball as Oakland won its eighth straight, beating San Francisco.
Hudson (4-6) opened the annual Bay Bridge series with his first victory since April 28. Hudson, who had lost four times during eight winless starts, won a duel with Jason Schmidt (2-2), who allowed seven hits and struck out seven in eight strong innings.
Billy Koch finished for his 14th save.
Scott Hatteberg had a two-run single for Oakland, and Eric Chavez hit his 17th homer as the A's extended their longest winning streak of the season.
Devil Rays 4, Marlins 3, 14 innings
MIAMI Luis Castillo extended his franchise-record hitting streak to 29 games, but it was Tampa Bay that came up big in extra innings.
Ben Grieve's RBI double broke a tie in the 14th, closing out the win at 12:25 a.m. Perhaps a hundred fans were still on hand when the game ended.
Steve Cox led off the 14th with a double against Oswaldo Mairena (2-1), then scored on Grieve's double. Esteban Yan (3-2) gave up the tying run in the 13th but earned the win.
Travis Harper pitched a scoreless inning for his first career save.
Indians 5, Rockies 3
DENVER Ryan Drese made his second consecutive strong start, and John McDonald drove in two runs as Cleveland beat Colorado.
Cleveland opened a 12-game road trip, its longest of the season, by winning for just the third time in nine games. It was the Indians' eighth win in their last 25 road games.
Drese (7-4) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings to win for the fifth time in seven starts.
Bob Wickman pitched the ninth for his 15th save.
Colorado starter John Thomson (6-6) allowed four runs on six hits in five innings to lose his third straight start.
Mariners 6, Padres 3
SAN DIEGO Freddy Garcia won his fifth straight start and Seattle roughed up former teammate Brett Tomko.
Tomko (3-5), traded from the Mariners to San Diego in a six-player deal Dec. 11, struggled against his former teammates and remains winless since May 13, a span that includes three losses and three no-decisions. He allowed eight hits, five runs and four walks in five innings.
Garcia (9-4) held the Padres to five hits and three runs in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two.
Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth for his 15th save.
John Olerud extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double in the fourth, and he and Ruben Sierra each drove in two runs for Seattle.
Tigers 6, Diamondbacks 3
PHOENIX In his second major league start, Detroit's Mike Maroth outpitched Curt Schilling and beat the World Series champions.
Maroth allowed five hits in eight innings and Wendell Magee hit the first inside-the-park home run at Bank One Ballpark.
Schilling (12-2) struck out 10 in six innings, but allowed four runs on eight hits in his first loss in 11 starts. He was 9-0 in 10 outings since losing to St. Louis on April 17.
Maroth (1-0) didn't allow a run in his first 13 innings in the big leagues. The 24-year-old left-hander threw seven scoreless innings, but got no decision in Detroit's 2-1 loss against Philadelphia last Saturday.
Juan Acevedo got three outs for his 10th save.
Angels 8, Dodgers 4
LOS ANGELES Ramon Ortiz gave up four hits, all solo homers, while going the distance, and Garret Anderson homered and drove in two runs as Anaheim beat Los Angeles.
In his third complete game of the year and seventh of his career, Ortiz (7-5) was tagged for two homers by Shawn Green and one each by Eric Karros and Alex Cora.
The Angels chased Dodgers rookie Kazuhisa Ishii, who had won 10 of his 12 starts, in the fourth inning, his earliest exit yet. Having control problems, Ishii (10-2) gave up six runs on seven hits and four walks in three-plus innings.
Brewers 7, Twins 5
MILWAUKEE Pinch-hitter Ronnie Belliard's two-run single off Mike Jackson in the eighth broke a tie and helped Milwaukee beat Minnesota.
Ray King (2-2) pitched a perfect eighth inning for the victory, which ended Milwaukee's seven-game losing streak.
Mike DeJean pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 16 chances.
Tyler Houston and Jose Hernandez hit back-to-back singles off Jackson (2-2) in the eighth and were sacrificed over by Robert Machado.
Neither starter was effective. Brewers left-hander Glendon Rusch gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings and Twins right-hander Rick Reed allowed five runs on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings.
Rangers 9, Astros 6
HOUSTON Michael Young went 5-for-5 with two homers and Texas put together a four-run sixth inning to beat Houston.
Young has hits in his last seven at bats. His five hits tied a club record for a nine-inning game. He hit solo homers in the second and the ninth and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth.
Randy Flores got the last out for his first save.
Former Astros reliever Jay Powell (1-0) got the Rangers out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the fifth for the win.
Nelson Cruz (0-4) pitched 2 2-3 innings for the loss. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
Yankees 4, Mets 2, 10 innings
NEW YORK Robin Ventura made a triumphant return to Shea Stadium by hitting a two-run homer in the 10th inning that carried the Yankees over the Mets.
Jorge Posada led off with a line drive off Satoru Komiyama (0-3). That brought up Ventura, who was traded to the Yankees in December.
Ventura hit a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right-center almost the same spot he hit his Grand Slam Single against Atlanta in the 2000 NLCS for his 16th homer. Ventura has four more homers than any Met.
Steve Karsay (3-2) got four outs for the win.
Expos 8, Blue Jays 2
MONTREAL Lee Stevens homered and had a season-high four RBIs, and Tomo Ohka pitched seven strong innings to lead Montreal.
Stevens drew a bases-loaded walk in the first off Justin Miller (4-3) before hitting a two-run homer his ninth of the season in the third.
Ohka (6-3) won his third straight decision, allowing solo homers to Chris Woodward and Vernon Wells, while scattering seven hits in seven innings.
Braves 2, Red Sox 1
ATLANTA Gary Sheffield drove in Rafael Furcal on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, leading Atlanta over Pedro Martinez and Boston.
Martinez (7-2) lost his second straight. He gave up both runs in eight innings of work, allowing eight hits and striking out five. In the three starts before this one, he allowed 11 earned runs, including three in his first loss of the season last Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Braves won for the ninth time in 10 games, with reliever Chris Hammond (5-2) getting four of those victories.
John Smoltz pitched the ninth for his 20th save.
Orioles 7, Phillies 3
PHILADELPHIA Jeff Conine tripled in two runs to break a tie in the eighth, lifting Baltimore over Philadelphia.
Philadelphia, coming off a 5-1 road trip, fell a season-worst 10 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the NL East. The Phillies finished two games behind the Braves last year.
Melvin Mora led off the eighth with a double off reliever Ricky Bottalico (0-3). Chris Singleton followed with a single and went to second when center fielder Doug Glanville's throw to the plate sailed over catcher Mike Lieberthal's head.
B.J. Ryan (1-0) got the final out in the seventh, Buddy Groom pitched a scoreless eighth and Jorge Julio worked the ninth to help the Orioles snap a two-game losing streak.
Cardinals 3, Royals 0
ST. LOUIS Matt Morris pitched eight innings of two-hit ball to lead St. Louis over Kansas City.
Morris (9-4) allowed singles in the first and second innings and then retired 12 consecutive batters before issuing a fifth-inning walk to Brent Mayne. Morris then retired eight more before walking pinch-hitter Donzel McDonald.
Steve Kline got the final out in the ninth for his second save.
Eli Marrero gave Morris the only run he needed in the second inning. With one out, Marrero hit a 2-1 offering from Miguel Asencio (1-1) over the left-field wall.
Asencio pitched five innings, allowing six hits and a walk. He hit two batters and struck out one.
