Records: Reds 36-28, first place in the National League Central; Pirates 31-34, third place in the NL Central.
The arms: Today RHP Elmer Dessens (4-3, 2.56 ERA) vs. RHP Kris Benson (0-3. 8.23); Saturday RHP Joey Hamilton (3-4, 5.16) vs. RHP Kip Wells (8-3, 3.27); Sunday RHP Jimmy Haynes (7-5, 4.38) vs. LHP Jimmy Anderson (5-8, 5.04).
The bats: The Pirates have hit .278 in their last 13 games to raise the team average to .239. Pokey Reese has six RBI in his last two games.
The rest: The key to the Reds' good start was beating the Pirates three straight games in the second series of the season. This is a key series, because Seattle and Oakland follow the Pirates to Cincinnati.
