Reds Notebook: Maybe Friday for Griffey
By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer
ARLINGTON, Texas - Ken Griffey Jr. was out of the Reds' starting lineup for the fifth straight game with a mildly strained right hamstring, though he did walk as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning.
He's not ready (to play every day), Bob Boone said. We may DH him this weekend.
Boone, of course, was kidding. The Reds play the Pirates at Cinergy Field this weekend, so there will be no DH. That makes Griffey's return tougher, but Boone said Griffey might play Friday.
He's started swinging pretty good, Boone said. But, if you're going to play in the field, you've got to be ready to go.
Griffey will do rehabilitation work today at Cinergy Field.
We hope he's back this weekend, Boone said. But when it gets in the muscle, you never know.
REST DAY: Barry Larkin and Aaron Boone were out of the starting lineup Wednesday night.
Juan Castro started at shortstop and Russell Branyan was at third. Sean Casey was the DH, Adam Dunn was at first base and Reggie Taylor started in center field.
FARM REPORT: On Tuesday, left-hander Ty Howington, the Reds' No.1 pick in 1999, made his second start since recovering from a bout with shoulder tendinitis. Howington pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits, in Double-A Chattanooga's 3-2 victory over Jacksonville.
Infielder Brandon Larson returned for Triple-A Louisville after being out since June 4 because of a pulled hamstring. He hit two solo homers (Nos.14 and 15 this season) and a two-run single in the Bats' 11-5 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Outfielder Brady Clark went 3-for-4 in that game and is hitting .438 since being sent to Louisville.
UP NEXT: The Reds are off today and open a three-game series with Pittsburgh on Friday, which is Chris Sabo bobblehead doll night. The first 10,000 fans entering the gates will be given Sabo dolls. There is no voucher system.
