Major league roundup

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Mike Mussina kept Barry Bonds and San Francisco at bay, pitching the New York Yankees past the Giants 2-1 Friday night in the renewal of one of baseball's most storied rivalries.

The Yankees began interleague play by ending the Giants' four-game winning streak. The teams last played meaningful games against each other in the 1962 World Series.

Mussina (9-2) won his sixth straight decision, pitching into the seventh inning.

Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances.

Livan Hernandez (5-6) gave up two runs in seven innings.

New York got an unearned run in the first and made it 2-0 in the fifth on singles by Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada.

Singles by Benito Santiago, J.T. Snow and Reggie Sanders made it 2-1 and finished Mussina with no outs.

        Diamondbacks 7, Red Sox 5

BOSTON — Miguel Batista lasted seven innings to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Boston Red Sox in their first Fenway Park appearance.

Batista (3-3) held Boston to one run on three hits through five innings before giving up three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. In all, he allowed five runs on seven hits, two walks and a wild pitch while striking out five.

Byung-Hyun Kim recorded the final two outs for his 15th save in 17 chances.

Frank Castillo (4-6) allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out five in three innings.

        Blue Jays 8, Rockies 0

TORONTO — Roy Halladay pitched a two-hitter for his first shutout of the season as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Colorado Rockies.

Halladay (7-2) didn't allow a baserunner until Benny Agbayani led off the sixth with a double into the gap in right-center.

The 25 year-old right-hander, who began last season at Single-A after being demoted from the majors, struck out three and walked none for his third career shutout and his first since Oct. 5, 2001 vs Cleveland.

Colorado starter Mike Hampton (3-7) allowed seven runs — five earned — and nine hits in five innings. He tied a season-high with six walks.

        Orioles 4, Dodgers 2

BALTIMORE — Rodrigo Lopez came within an out of his first complete game in the majors, and Melvin Mora hit two home runs as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lopez (6-1) had a six-hitter before being lifted with two outs in the ninth. The right-hander struck out three and walked one.

Making his 15th career start, Lopez outpitched Andy Ashby (5-5), who allowed four runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings.

Jorge Julio struck out Adrian Beltre for his 11th save.

        Mets 4, Indians 3

CLEVELAND — Roberto Alomar won in his return to Jacobs Field and Al Leiter, facing Cleveland for the first time since the 1997 World Series, pitched into the eighth as the New York Mets snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over the Indians.

Alomar went 1-for-4 in his first appearance in Cleveland since being dealt to New York on Dec. 11 in a blockbuster, eight-player trade. Edgardo Alfonzo drove in two runs.

Leiter (6-5) snapped a personal three-game slide and Alfonzo homered off Danys Baez (5-5) as the Mets won their first meeting with the Indians.

Armando Benitez got four outs for his 12th save.

        Phillies 11, Tigers 1

DETROIT — Scott Rolen went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Jimmy Rollins and Marlon Anderson added three hits each in Philadelphia's sixth win in 28 road games. Detroit has lost four in a row and eight of nine.

Vicente Padilla (8-4) won for the third time in four starts, giving up one run on six hits and a walk in seven innings. Padilla, who struck out three, has eight quality starts in 13 tries this season, and lowered his ERA to 2.87.

Jeff Weaver (4-8) allowed seven runs on 11 hits and two walks in four innings in his shortest outing of the season.

        Padres 8, Devil Rays 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Ramon Vazquez hit a grand slam and Brian Lawrence allowed three runs in seven innings as the San Diego Padres snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

San Diego's Bubba Trammell had a solo homer in his return to Tropicana Field.

Lawrence (6-3) gave up six hits in surpassing his victory total from his rookie season last year. He had five strikeouts.

Ryan Rupe (5-7) allowed six runs and six hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked four.

        A's 5, Astros 3

OAKLAND, Calif. — Terrence Long hit two solo homers, and Mark Mulder won his third straight start as the Oakland Athletics beat the Houston Astros.

Mulder (5-4) allowed three runs on five hits over 7 1-3 innings, striking out eight. The lanky left-hander has rebounded after losing a career-high four consecutive starts and spending nearly a month on the disabled list.

Long homered off Houston starter Roy Oswalt (6-4) in consecutive at-bats.

Billy Koch got six outs for his 12th save, giving the A's six victories in eight games and spoiling Houston's first visit to Oakland Coliseum.

        Cubs 2, Mariners 0

SEATTLE — Sammy Sosa hit his 21st home run and rookie right-hander Mark Prior had a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed four hits in seven innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Seattle Mariners.

Sosa took over the major league home run lead from Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez.

Fred McGriff hit his 10th homer of the season off Joel Pineiro (4-3) with two out in the eighth. Pineiro has lost three straight.

Making his fourth start since being called up from Triple-A Iowa May 22, Prior (2-1) dazzled the Mariners with his curve and a fastball clocked at 99 mph.

Antonio Alfonseca got his 10th save in 12 opportunities.

        Braves 13, Rangers 7

ARLINGTON, Texas — Every Atlanta batter either drove in a run or scored by the third inning as the Braves roughed up Chan Ho Park in the shortest start of his career, then held on for a victory over the Texas Rangers.

Park (2-3), making his sixth start of the season after signing a $65 million, five-year contract last winter, gave up nine runs on eight hits while getting only four outs.

Chris Hammond, who came on in the sixth with runners on second and third and one out, was credited with the win — his third in as many appearances. Hammond (4-2) allowed two hits in 2 2-3 scoreless innings.

        Twins 12, Marlins 7

MINNEAPOLIS — Torii Hunter had three hits and three RBI as the Minnesota Twins ended the Florida Marlins' four-game winning streak.

Every Twins starter had a hit and an RBI other than Corey Koskie. David Ortiz was the only starter who failed to score a run.

Johan Santana (1-0), making his first start of the season, set a career-high with eight strikeouts and gave up four hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Almost nothing went right for the Marlins. Ryan Dempster (3-6) allowed 10 runs and 11 hits in four-plus innings. He walked four and didn't record a strikeout. His teammates committed a season-high four errors.

        Cardinals 12, Royals 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tino Martinez homered and had a season-high four hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals.

Albert Pujols doubled three times and drove in three runs for the Cardinals, whose 12 runs were a season high.

Darryl Kile (4-3) went 5 1-3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Kile is 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA in his past five starts.

Paul Byrd (8-4) gave up seven runs, five of which were earned, on 10 hits over six innings. He has allowed 12 earned runs in 9 2-3 innings, a 11.20 ERA, in losing his past two starts.

        Expos 4, White Sox 3

CHICAGO — Tony Armas Jr. won for the first time in five starts, and Troy O'Leary hit a two-run homer as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox (30-31) have dropped 10 of 12 to fall below .500 for the first time since April 9.

Kenny Lofton stole his 500th career base in the sixth inning for Chicago, and Frank Thomas hit his 12th home run of the season.

Armas (6-7), allowed just one hit in five-plus innings before leaving with a blister on his right middle finger. T.J. Tucker got four outs for his third save in five opportunities.

Dan Wright (5-7) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings.

        Pirates 6, Brewers 1

PITTSBURGH — The Milwaukee Brewers avoided Brian Giles as much as they could, so he did his damage when they had no chance to pitch around him.

Giles hit a three-run double in the fifth inning to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Brewers 6-1 Friday night.

Pittsburgh's cleanup hitter improved to 6-for-7 in his career against Milwaukee starter Ben Sheets.

“Whatever Brian Giles does is no fluke,” Milwaukee manager Jerry Royster said. “He's an All-Star. That's why he hits in that spot. Give him credit. He's their best guy and he came through.”

Giles said he didn't know the exact numbers against Sheets.

“I don't think you really remember the guys you hit,” he said. “I think you remember more the guys you have trouble with because you maybe try to change your approach. When you play every day, you don't concern yourself so much with that stuff because you expect to get your at-bats.”

Rob Mackowiak added a two-run double as the Pirates sent Milwaukee to just its second loss in seven games.

Richie Sexson hit his 16th home run for the Brewers, who are 0-4 against Pittsburgh this year and 1-10 at PNC Park over two seasons.

“The two stars got it done,” Royster said. “Richie hit a home run for us and Giles got the big hit for them. They had some guys on base when he did it.”

Joe Beimel (1-1) allowed two hits in five innings, including Sexson's home run in the fourth, to win his first start of the season. Sean Lowe, Mike Fetters and Brian Boehringer combined for four scoreless innings of relief.

“Joe gave us exactly what we were looking for,” Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said. “I was very pleased. He pitched extremely well.”

Sheets (3-6) had a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Abraham Nunez, batting for Beimel, beat out an infield single to start the inning. Nunez advanced to second on Chad Hermansen's single. After failing on two sacrifice attempts, Jack Wilson successfully bunted an 0-2 pitch and beat Sheets' throw to first for a single.

Giles cleared the bases with a double to left-center. Giles walked and doubled in his previous plate appearances. He has eight hits in his last 20 at-bats and has raised his average to .326.

Sheets has lost three consecutive decisions.

Pittsburgh broke the game open with three runs in the seventh against Chad Fox. Wilson started the rally with his third single of the game. Jason Kendall doubled, Giles was walked intentionally and Craig Wilson drew a bases-loaded walk before Mackowiak doubled in two runs.

Beimel made 21 relief appearances before he was moved into the rotation to replace Dave Williams, who is facing left shoulder surgery.
