Griffey leaves game with injured hamstring
The Associated Press
ANAHEIM, Calif. Cincinnati Reds star Ken Griffey Jr. limped off the field during Friday night's game against the Anaheim Angels with a mild strain of his right hamstring.
Although the injury was considered minor by most accounts, Griffey was holding back tears as he sat dejectedly at his locker after the game.
It's bad enough, said Griffey who was limping and had his leg wrapped and iced. I don't think people know how hard this is. I've gone through this for two years, I just want to play.
Griffey returned to the Reds only two weeks ago after missing 41 games earlier this season with a torn tendon in his right knee. This injury is to the same leg, but it's a different area.
It's not bad, Reds manager Bob Boone said. It's not his bad hamstring. The doctor felt around and didn't feel anything. I'm hoping it just scared him a little.
Boone did not expect Griffey to play Saturday, but he did not rule out using him as a pinch hitter.
With the Reds trailing 4-0, Griffey pulled up lame after hustling to first base on a fielder's choice grounder in the fourth inning. Reggie Taylor pinch-ran for Griffey and replaced him in center field.
Angels team physician Dr. Craig Milhouse examined Griffey. He is day to day.
Griffey tore the patella tendon in his right knee on April 7 during a rundown against Montreal. He came into Friday night's game batting just .208 with two homers and four RBIs.
Griffey tore his left hamstring in spring training last year, limiting him to 111 games.
The Reds lost the game to the Angels 4-3.
