Haynes gives Reds their money's worth

Jimmy Haynes, the Reds' bargain pickup on the free agent market this winter, is paying off nicely.
The 29-year-old right-hander beat the St.Louis Cardinals 3-2 Thursday for his third victory in three decisions, pushing his record to 6-5.
Haynes' six wins lead the Reds.
I guess I'm on a bit of roll, he said. I've felt pretty good the last three starts.
That qualifies as bragging by Haynes, who is among the most modest and soft-spoken of the Reds.
The Reds were hoping to get innings out of Haynes when they signed him, but they also have gotten some big wins. Thursday's victory was his third straight over a team with a .500-plus record.
Haynes beat the Cards despite a shaky start. He walked three in the first two innings, and he loaded the bases with no outs in the second but allowed only one run.
I was trying to be too fine, Haynes said. The middle of their order is pretty good. I was lucky to get out with only one run.
Haynes went 5 1/3innings, allowing the one run on five hits. He walked three and struck out three.
THANK YOU: Reds closer Danny Graves knows the stats. So he was happy manager Bob Boone left in left-hander Gabe White to face right-handed-hitting Edgar Renteria in the eighth.
I said, "Thank God,' Graves said.
Renteria is 6-for-12 against Graves, including a two-run homer in a 4-2 loss May 10. Boone had taken out White and inserted Graves just before Renteria came up in that game. White, by the way, struck out Renteria on a called third strike Thursday.
NEWCOMER: Right-hander Jose Silva felt like he was going to the big leagues for the first time when he was driving from Louisville to Cincinnati on Thursday.
It's a new team, new everything, he said. I can't wait to help out.
Silva, a 28-year-old right-hander, was added to the Reds' roster Wednesday. He has been rehabbing his elbow in the minor leagues since May 13.
I feel pretty good, Silva said. I've been pretty happy with the way the elbow's felt. I think it was time for me to come up.
Silva had a 1.13 ERA in 10 games with Triple-A Louisville. He threw three innings Tuesday, so he wasn't available to pitch for the Reds on Thursday.
Silva might assume Luis Pineda's bullpen role. Pineda was sent to Louisville to make room for Silva.
Silva, who has made 53 starts in the majors, might get a look as the fifth starter sometime.
Whatever they want, Silva said. When they say, "Silva, get up,' I'll be ready.
The Reds obtained Silva in December for minor-leaguer Ben Shaffar. Silva was 3-3 with a 6.75 ERA with the Pirates last year.
INTERESTED VISITOR: Right-hander Seth Etherton stopped by the Reds clubhouse Thursday.
Etherton was promoted from Double-A Chattanooga to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. He will make his first start for the Bats on Saturday.
Etherton, 25, has been rehabbing his shoulder since March 20, 2001, after surgery to remove bone spurs and repair a torn labrum.
It's been a long time, he said. But I wouldn't say it's frustrating, because I'm pitching and my shoulder is fine.
Etherton was impressive in Double-A. He was 0-1 in three starts, but he allowed only one run and five hits in 9 1/3innings.
Etherton said it will take more time before he is ready to pitch for the Reds.
I couldn't pitch here right now because my off-speed stuff isn't good enough, he said. My velocity isn't completely back. They said it won't be until spring training next year. But it's getting better.
Etherton also needs to build arm strength.
It's a matter of going out there every fifth day, he said. I want to be up here as soon as possible. But how I pitch and what happens here dictates that.
FARM REPORT: Left-hander Ty Howington makes his first start since April 21 for Chattanooga. Howington, the Reds' top pick in the 1999 draft, has been rehabbing his shoulder after a bout with tendinitis.
