Reds-Cardinals series preview

        • When: 7:10 p.m. today and Wednesday; 12:35 p.m. Thursday.

        • Where: Cinergy Field.

        • TV: Today and Wednesday, Fox Sports Net; Wednesday, also ESPN2 (subject to blackout).

        • Radio: WLW-AM (700).

        • Records: Reds 33-23, first in National League Central; Cardinals, 31-25, second in NL Central.

        • The arms: Today — RHP Joey Hamilton (3-2, 3.83 ERA) vs. RHP Jason Simontacchi (3-0, 2.73); Wednesday — RHP Jimmy Haynes (5-5, 4.84) vs. RHP Woody Williams (2-1, 2.33); Thursday — RHP Chris Reitsma (3-2, 2.65) vs. RHP Darryl Kile (3-3, 3.48).

        • The bats: Jim Edmonds is the steady star, batting .341 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI — team highs in all categories — and playing Gold Glove defense in center field. He's hitting .360 vs. right-handers. J.D. Drew, who bats .286, seems more comfortable on the road (.315). The Cardinals hit .261 as a team, sixth in the league.

        • The rest: The Cardinals' record has improved as its pitching staff has. Their 3.97 team ERA ranks sixth in the NL, two spots behind the Reds (3.64). The Cards have won five of the seven meetings with the Reds thus far. After this series, the teams meet again June 28-30 in St. Louis, then don't face off again for two months.
