Pete Rose may get last Cinergy hurrah

Agent trying to organize softball game

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Pete Rose might get one more cheer in Riverfront Stadium before his former home, now called Cinergy Field, comes down in a pile of rubble.

Hamilton County, owner of the stadium, is working with Mr. Rose's agent, Warren Green, to organize a softball game on Sept. 23 at Cinergy Field that would feature Mr. Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and other former Reds.

The event may be co-sponsored by the county with Mr. Green's company, Dreams Inc.

The game would not involve the Reds or Major League Baseball, which has banned Mr. Rose for life for gambling.

The Reds' last regular season home game is Sept. 22, with the team finishing its regular season schedule a week later, Sept. 29, in Montreal.

Mr. Green said the deal is not final.

“There is nothing signed, everything is in discussion,” Mr. Green said. “Everything still has to be worked out — from airline tickets to Pete's schedule.”

John Allen, the Reds' chief financial officer, said the team doesn't have any concerns about Mr. Rose's appearance.

“We've sold out Saturday and Sunday (the last two games in Cinergy), and there's only a few thousand left for Friday,” Mr. Allen said. “From an economic standpoint, obviously this is after the fact and doesn't detract from our plans for the final weekend.”

Pat Courtney, a Major League Baseball spokesman, said there isn't anything MLB can do about Mr. Rose playing in a softball game.

“It would be difficult for us to have much say in it, being that the county owns the facility,” Mr. Courtney said.

Mr. Rose holds the record for most hits. He played most of his 24 seasons in Cincinnati.
