The Associated Press

STARS — Monday — Jose Cruz Jr., Blue Jays, hit two home runs and drove in four runs as Toronto defeated Tampa Bay 6-1.

        — Ramon Santiago, Tigers, hit a pair of home runs — the first of his career — in Detroit's 7-6 extra-inning win over Boston.

        — Chris Hammond, Mike Remlinger, Kevin Gryboski and John Smoltz, Braves, pitched 5 1-3 scoreless innings in relief of Kevin Millwood as Atlanta outlasted the New York Mets 5-4.

        — Eric Karros, Dodgers, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs in Los Angeles' 11-5 win over Colorado.

        — Marvin Benard, Giants, homered, doubled twice and had three RBIs to lead San Francisco to a 11-3 win over San Diego.

       GOOD DEBUT

After managing 1,759 games in the minor leagues, Carlos Tosca made his first appearance at the helm of a major league team Monday. Tosca's Toronto Blue Jays beat Tampa Bay 6-1. Second-year manager Buck Martinez was fired before the game.

       BACK-TO-BACK

Boston's Pedro Martinez hadn't given up more than one home run in a game since June 25, 2000, but Detroit's first two batters took him deep Monday night. Ramon Santiago and Damion Easley each homered in the first inning of a game the Tigers eventually won 7-6 in 10 innings. Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell were the last Tigers to start a game with consecutive homers on Aug. 5, 1986, against Cleveland. ... Paul Bako and Lenny Harris hit back-to-back homers in a five-run seventh inning as Milwaukee rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

       MASTERS OF MARIANO

After giving up a run in the top of the ninth of Baltimore's 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Monday, Mariano Rivera is now just 1-7 with a 4.47 ERA lifetime against the Orioles. No other team has beaten Rivera more than twice.

       STREAKS END

Kip Wells saw his four-game winning streak end with a 7-5 loss to Montreal. The Pittsburgh starter also had his scoreless inning streak snapped at 22 1-3 innings when he gave up three runs in the third. ... The slumping Chicago White Sox defeated Kansas City 4-0 to snap a seven-game losing streak. ... Erubiel Durazo ended an 0-for-21 skid with a two-run homer in Arizona's 10-4 win over Houston. ... Los Angeles was held without a homer for the first time in 11 games. The Dodgers still rolled up 11 runs, however, to beat Colorado by six.

        DAMAGE CONTROL

Seattle's Freddy Garcia's last five runs allowed have all come on solo homers.

        DRAFT CENTRAL

The Oakland Athletics have four picks in the first round of Tuesday's draft and seven in the top 39.

        TEAM EFFORT

Every San Francisco starter had at least a hit and a run in Monday's 11-3 rout of San Diego. The Giants finished the game with a season-high 20 hits.

        DIAMOND

Arizona's Curt Schilling is 22-2 in his last 29 starts, counting the postseason. He was 5-0 in six starts in May with a 2.80 ERA and 62 strikeouts. On the season, Schilling is 11-1 with a 2.81 ERA and 131 strikeouts. Arizona topped Houston 10-4 Monday, raising Schilling's record to 22-1 in starts following a Diamondback loss.

        ROOKIE RECORD

Oakland rookie Aaron Harang went scoreless until the fifth inning against Seattle on Monday, to start his career with 11 scoreless innings, surpassing the Oakland record of 10 set by John Henry Johnson in 1978.

        SPEAKING

“I've seen some weird things in baseball, and that's got to be one of the craziest. Practice balls in a game!” — Montreal catcher Michael Barrett on how balls clearly marked “practice” made their way into Monday's game against Pittsburgh.

        SEASONS
       June 4

1951 — Pittsburgh's Gus Bell hit for the cycle to lead the Pirates to a 12-4 victory over the Phillies at Philadelphia.

1964 — Sandy Koufax pitched his third no-hitter, striking out 12, as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Phillies 3-0 in Philadelphia.

1968 — Don Drysdale of the Dodgers blanked the Pirates 5-0 for his sixth straight shutout en route to a record 58 2-3 scoreless innings.

1974 — The game between the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium was forfeited to Texas. Umpire Nestor Chylak had problems with the fans throughout the evening — primarily because it was 10-cent beer night. They got out of control when the Tribe tied the score 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth.

1990 — Ramon Martinez struck out 18 batters and pitched a three-hitter as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 6-0.

1996 — Pamela Davis pitched one inning of scoreless relief and got the win in a minor league exhibition game. She is believed to be the first woman to pitch for a major league farm club under the current structure of the minor league system. Davis, a 21-year-old right-hander, pitched for the Jacksonville Suns, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, against the Australian Olympic team.

2000 — Tampa Bay's Esteban Yan became the 77th major league player to homer in his first at-bat, but just the fourth AL pitcher and the first since Calrule took the bat out of AL pitchers' hands.

        Today's birthdays: J.C. Romero, 26; Darin Erstad, 28.
