Notre Dame's Sollmann sets NCAA record
The Associated Press
SOUTH BEND, Ind. St. Xavier product Steve Sollmann set one NCAA Tournament record and three Notre Dame marks Saturday in the Irish's 25-1 victory over top-seeded South Alabama in the South Bend Regional baseball tournament.
Sollmann, a sophomore second baseman, went 6-for-7 with seven RBI and an NCAA-record six runs scored. His hit, runs and RBI totals are Notre Dame records for any game.
Sollmann singled three times, tripled twice and homered once. The only time he didn't get a hit, he reached on a fielder's choice.
Sollmann was second-team all-Big East this season after being the conference Freshman of the Year last season.
Sollmann, bothered by an injured quad muscle early in the season, raised his average to .344. He has two homers and 43 RBI.
Notre Dame also set a school record with 32 hits.
The Irish improved to 46-15 and are 37-5 since a 9-10 start. Notre Dame today will play the winner of Saturday night's South Alabama-Ohio State game. That winner would have to beat the Irish twice to advance.
SHORTSTOP ROYALTY: Surrounded by his two boyhood idols, Omar Vizquel flashed a smile as golden as the award he cradled in his hands.
And with former star shortstops Luis Aparicio and Davey Concepcion flanking him, Vizquel's ninth Gold Glove trophy couldn't have been any safer.
With 23 Gold Gloves among them, this trio wasn't going to let anything hit the ground.
This is awesome, Vizquel, the Cleveland Indians' acrobatic shortstop said. I knew Luis was coming, but Davey being here was a big surprise. When you talk about shortstops in my country, this is a big deal.
Only Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, who won 13 Gold Gloves, collected more trophies for fielding excellence at shortstop than Vizquel.
Aparicio also won nine Gold Gloves during his 18-year Hall of Fame career with the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore and Boston.
He says once Vizquel stops playing, he should be enshrined in Cooperstown, too.
He's one of the best ever, the 68-year-old Aparicio said.
Vizquel vividly recalls the first time he met Concepcion, who won five Gold Gloves with Cincinnati's Big Red Machine in the 1970s.
I was 10 years old, Vizquel said, and I got my picture taken with him. Then I got it taken again 10 years later when I was in the majors.
UMPIRE OK: Plate umpire Steve Rippley was released from the Bayfront Medical Center early Saturday, a day after being hit in the left temple by a ball during a game between Oakland and Tampa Bay.
A re-examination of X-rays found Rippley has a slight non-displaced fracture. Surgery was not required.
