NL roundup

The Associated Press

CHICAGO — Richard Hidalgo hit two home runs and Carlos Hernandez allowed three hits over seven innings as the Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs.

Sammy Sosa hit his major league-leading 19th homer for Chicago in the eighth inning.

Hernandez (5-2) struck out seven and walked a career-high five. The left-hander was replaced by Octavio Dotel at the start of the eighth, and Billy Wagner pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Hidalgo opened the scoring in the seventh with his ninth homer of the season, a two-out shot off Cubs starter Jason Bere (1-8) that landed on Waveland Ave.

Hidalgo finished a 4-for-4 performance with another two-run homer off Juan Cruz in the ninth.

The two-homer game came two days after Hidalgo threw a bat bag and broke a chair in the clubhouse after an argument with manager Jimy Williams over the outfielder's benching. Williams was in Florida on Friday for son Shawn's high school graduation.

        Pirates 3, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS — Craig Wilson went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, and rookie Josh Fogg pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fogg faced the Cardinals for the second straight outing and fared a lot better in the rematch, allowing only J.D. Drew's eighth home run leading off the seventh.

Fogg (6-3) lasted just 4 1-3 innings last Sunday in Pittsburgh, giving up three homers in a 7-3 loss.

Mike Williams worked the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances.

Cardinals starter Woody Williams (2-1) gave up three runs on 10 hits in seven innings — his longest outing since coming off the disabled list May 15 after being out with a pulled muscle in his side.

        Expos 8, Phillies 7

PHILADELPHIA — Troy O'Leary homered and drove in four runs, and Fernando Tatis added a two-run homer to lead the Montreal Expos over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies, who finished two games behind Atlanta in the NL East last year, fell a season-worst 11 games under .500 with their sixth loss in seven games.

Jeremy Giambi, Mike Lieberthal, Marlon Anderson and Pat Burrell homered for Philadelphia, which rallied from a 5-0 first-inning deficit. But Jimmy Rollins and Anderson failed to get the potential tying run home from third in the ninth.

Montreal has won four straight against the Phillies, including a three-game sweep last week.

Javier Vazquez (3-2) allowed six runs and nine hits in seven innings.

T.J. Tucker worked around a one-out double in the ninth to pinch-hitter Tomas Perez for his fourth save in as many chances.

Phillies starter Brandon Duckworth (2-4) gave up seven runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings.

        Brewers 12, Padres 1

SAN DIEGO — Geoff Jenkins hit his first career grand slam, and Ruben Quevedo pitched seven strong innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the San Diego Padres.

Alex Sanchez matched his career best with four of Milwaukee's season-high 19 hits.

The Padres, who placed slugger Phil Nevin on the disabled list with a broken left arm earlier in the day, got their only run on a solo homer by Ryan Klesko in the fifth.

Quevedo (3-5) gave up one run on seven hits in front of a fireworks-night crowd of 56,167, San Diego's largest since opening day

Jenkins' homer to left field in the fourth inning came off San Diego starter Dennis Tankersley (1-1) and gave Milwaukee a 7-1 lead.

        Rockies 6, Giants 2

SAN FRANCISCO — Rookie Jason Jennings retired his first 16 batters, and Todd Helton hit a three-run homer off Ryan Jensen (4-5) for Colorado.

San Francisco shortstop Ramon Martinez was carted off the field in the ninth inning after he was hit in the face by a tipped throw from first baseman J.T. Snow.

Jennings (7-2) allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings for his fifth straight win. He walked Yorvit Torrealba with one out in the sixth, but did not allow a hit until Barry Bonds' single to right-center with one out in the seventh.

The Giants, swept by the Rockies in a three-game series at Coors Field last weekend, have dropped three straight and six of eight.

        Diamondbacks 6 Dodgers 3

LOS ANGELES — Randy Johnson, roughed up by Los Angeles five days earlier, went eight innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers .

Greg Colbrunn's three-run double highlighted a four-run outburst in the third for the Diamondbacks, who dealt Omar Daal (4-1) his first loss of the year.

Johnson (9-1) gave up six hits, struck out four and walked one to win for the 18th time in his last 20 decisions dating back to last season. All three runs were unearned.

The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner for Arizona, who earlier won the AL Cy Young with Seattle, has a 26-3 record the last 35 times he's pitched, including three victories when the Diamondbacks won the World Series last fall.

Byung-Hyun Kim pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances.

        Mets 6, Marlins 5, 10 innings

MIAMI — Rey Ordonez tied a career high with four RBIs, including his first homer of the season in the 10th inning, and the New York Mets beat the Florida Marlins.

Ordonez also doubled home three runs in the second inning. The home run, which came with two outs in the 10th off Vladimir Nunez (4-2), was Ordonez's first since last Sept. 7 at Florida.

The light-hitting shortstop had just eight extra-base hits coming into the game, all doubles. Teammate Roger Cedeno hit his second home run.

The Mets remained a half-game behind NL East leader Atlanta. The Marlins lost their fourth in a row, all at home, and fell three games below .500 for the first time this season.

Florida had just three hits in the first seven innings but scored three times in the eighth to make it 5-all. Grant Roberts (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth. Armando Benitez followed with a perfect 10th for his 11th save in 12 chances.
