AL roundup

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Derek Lowe overcame two rain delays to pitch six scoreless innings and the Boston Red Sox won another road game, snapping a seven-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium with a victory over the New York Yankees.

Nomar Garciaparra tripled and scored on a wild pitch from David Wells (6-2) to give Boston the lead in the sixth inning. Jason Varitek hit a two-run double and Tony Clark added a two-run homer as the Red Sox broke the game open in the eighth.

Boston became the first team in major league history to start a season 21-4 away from home.

New York had won five straight and 18 of 22, hitting 45 homers in that stretch. But they couldn't generate anything against Lowe (8-2), who hasn't given up a homer all season.

        Blue Jays 4, Tigers 2

DETROIT — Carlos Delgado tripled and homered, driving in three runs to help the Toronto Blue Jays end a six-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

The Comerica Park scoreboard kept fans well-informed about the Detroit Red Wings' big lead over the Colorado Avalanche at nearby Joe Louis Arena, causing several oddly timed cheers to erupt from the crowd of 28,578.

Esteban Loaiza (3-1) beat the Tigers for the third time in a row, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks in 7 1-3 innings.

Adam Bernero (1-1) took the loss in his second start of the year.

        Indians 7, White Sox 0

CLEVELAND — Bartolo Colon pitched his second shutout of the season, leading the Cleveland Indians over Chicago and handing the White Sox their fifth straight loss.

Einar Diaz broke out of an 0-for-22 slump to drive in three runs and Jim Thome homered. The Indians scored six runs with two outs.

Colon (7-3) worked around eight hits, striking out four and walking two. He had lost his previous five decisions to the White Sox.

Gary Glover (1-1) made his fifth straight start without going more than five innings. He has given up 19 earned runs in his last 21 1-3 innings.

        Orioles 8, Mariners 7, 10 innings

BALTIMORE — Geronimo Gil drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a comeback victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Chris Singleton, Tony Batista and Jeff Conine homered for the Orioles, who trailed 5-0 in the third inning and 7-3 in the seventh. It was Conine's ninth home run of the season and fourth in three games.

The Mariners had been 24-0 when leading after seven innings.

John Halama (2-1) got the loss. Rick Bauer (3-2) pitched the 10th for the Orioles, who improved to 5-0 in extra innings this season.

        Angels 11, Twins 3

MINNEAPOLIS — Jarrod Washburn won again and each of his teammates had a hit by the fourth inning as the Anaheim Angels beat the Minnesota Twins.

Bengie Molina went 4-for-5 and Scott Spiezio, Troy Glaus and Benji Gil each drove in two runs for the Angels, who have won 24 of their last 31 games and outscored their opponents 219-107 in that span.

Washburn (5-2) has won five straight decisions, and he was never in any danger of defeat. He struck out seven and walked three in six innings. He gave up four hits and an earned run before yielding to Ben Weber after throwing 112 pitches.

Eric Milton (7-4) produced his shortest start of the year on a night when Minnesota's bullpen desperately needed a break. Because of injury-shortened outings by Rick Reed and Brad Radke, Twins relievers have pitched 23 innings over the last three games.

        Athletics 13, Devil Rays 9

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Miguel Tejada, Jermaine Dye and Eric Chavez hit consecutive RBI singles during a four-run ninth inning as the Oakland Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Devil Rays lost despite scoring eight runs in the fourth, all with two outs.

Plate umpire Steve Rippley was taken off the field on a stretcher after being hit in the left temple by a ball in the sixth inning. He was alert and talking as he was taken to the hospital for examination.

Rippley was hurt after Adam Piatt was hit by Tampa Bay reliever Lee Gardner's pitch. The ball then went off catcher John Flaherty and struck Rippley.

Mike Venafro (2-1) worked two scoreless innings for the victory. Billy Koch got the final three outs. Esteban Yan (2-2) took the loss.

        Royals 10, Rangers 7, 11 innings

ARLINGTON, Texas — Carlos Beltran, Mike Sweeney and Joe Randa hit consecutive homers in the 11th inning on five pitches from closer Hideki Irabu to lift the Kansas City Royals to a victory over the Texas Rangers.

Beltran hit a grand slam in a six-run seventh, then broke a 7-all tie with a one-out solo shot in the 11th off Irabu (2-4). Beltran had his fifth career multihomer game.

Sweeney and Randa followed with homers for a 10-7 lead, sending the Royals to their fifth win in six games.

Cory Bailey (3-4) allowed two hits over two shutout innings for the victory. He became the first pitcher in Royals history to win both ends of a doubleheader against Texas on Sunday.
