Reds chatter

Enquirer staff and news services

        LARKIN MILESTONES: Barry Larkin keeps climbing the Reds' charts. Larkin, who Thursday had his 7,000th big-league at-bat, is now fourth in Reds history, behind only Pete Rose, Dave Concepcion and Johnny Bench in that category.

        Since the season began, Larkin has (entering Friday):

        • moved into third on the hits list at 2,083, passing Bench.

        • moved into fourth in total bases (3,156), passing Concepcion.

        • moved into fifth in extra-base hits (635), passing Vada Pinson.

        Also, he needs only two doubles (380) to pass Bench for third.

Memorial memories

        The old baseball bromide is that a team in first place on Memorial Day you have a good chance of staying there.

        While the Reds are fighting to get to Monday in first place, here's a look at where the NL Central stood last Memorial Day, and how it finished:

        Memorial Day
       W-L Pct. GB

St. Louis=27-20=574=—
       Chicago=27-20=.574—
       Milwaukee=25-23=.521=2
       Houston=24-23=.511=3
       Reds=21-28=.417=7
       Pittsburgh=15-32=.319=12

       Final standings
       *Houston=93-69=.574=—
       St. Louis=93-69=.574=—
       Chicago=88-74=.543=5
       Milwaukee=68-94=.420=25
       Reds=66-96=.407=27
       Pittsburgh=62-100=.383=31
       *Astros won division by virtue of winning season series.

        Note: Philadelphia led the NL East, but Atlanta won the division title; Arizona was tied for the NL West lead, and won the division.

Bullpen session

        Here are a few items from the Reds bullpen, which entered the weekend with the second-best ERA in the NL:

        • Has allowed opponents a .213 batting average;

        • Pitchers have retired 77 percent of the first batters they faced;

        • Has allowed 21 of 86 inherited runners to score;

        • Opponents are hitting only .180 against Scott Williamson;

        • Danny Graves has walked only three batters — two intentional passes to Barry Bonds.

Pressure cooker

        Here are the best and worst Reds with runners in scoring position:
       The best
       Adam Dunn .351 (13-37)
       Brady Clark .364 (4-11)
       Corky Miller .333 (5-15)
        The worst
       Aaron Boone .125 (7-56)
       Barry Larkin .194 (7-36)
       Todd Walker .224 (11-49)
        The team .227

The week ahead

               Monday — first off day since May 9
       Tuesday — at Florida, 7:05
       Wednesday — at Florida, 7:05
       Thursday — at Florida, 7:05
       Friday — vs. Atlanta, 7:10
       Saturday — vs. Atlanta, 1:15
       Sunday — vs. Atlanta, 1:15

        The skinny: The series each are encores from the past week. The Reds beat the Marlins two of three at Cinergy.
