NL roundup

Cubs 5, Astros 4, 11 innings

The Associated Press

HOUSTON — Fred McGriff and Moises Alou each had RBI singles in the 11th inning off Billy Wagner, leading Chicago to its fourth straight victory.

The Astros lost their fifth in a row after winning seven straight. The Cubs have won five of six after breaking out of a nine-game losing streak.

Chris Stynes led off the 11th against Wagner (0-1) with a single and went to third on a single by Sammy Sosa. McGriff followed with the go-ahead single and Alou's single scored Sosa to make it 5-3. Alou was playing his first game in Houston since leaving as a free agent in the offseason.

Pat Mahomes (1-0) pitched 1 2-3 innings for the victory. Joe Borowski relieved Mahomes with two on and two outs and allowed an RBI single to Lance Berkman before getting Jeff Bagwell to fly out for his second save.

        Pirates 5, Cardinals 2

PITTSBURGH — Kip Wells shut down the league's hottest team by limiting St. Louis to three singles over 6 2-3 shutout innings in Pittsburgh's victory.

The Cardinals figured to carry the momentum from their 9-1 homestand into PNC Park, where they were 6-1 last season, only to lose for just the second time in 12 games and third in 15 games.

Wells (7-2), who has accounted for nearly one-third of the Pirates' 22 victories, won for the sixth time in seven decisions, never allowing a runner to third.

Garrett Stephenson (1-3) took the loss.

        Mets 5, Marlins 4, 10 innings

NEW YORK — Vic Darensbourg (1-1) walked four batters in the 10th inning, including Jay Payton with the bases loaded, as New York overcame Armando Benitez's first blown save of the year.

After Tim Raines tied the game with two outs in the ninth against Benitez with his first career pinch homer, the Mets won it in the 10th.

After Benitez blew his first save in 10 chances, Scott Strickland (4-2) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.

        Expos 4, Phillies 1

MONTREAL — Vladimir Guerrero's three-run double off Randy Wolf (3-3) capped Montreal's four-run seventh innings and led the Expos past Philadelphia.

Tomo Ohka (4-3) pitched seven strong innings and Jose Vidro had two hits to extend his career-best hitting streak to 18 games, tied for the longest in the majors this season.

Phillies manager Larry Bowa began serving a three-game suspension and was replaced by bench coach Gary Varsho.

Scott Stewart pitched the last two innings for his first save.

        Brewers 6, Padres 2

MILWAUKEE — Marcus Jensen made the most of his first start of the season, hitting a three-run homer to lead Milwaukee past San Diego.

Jensen's 415-foot drive to right-center off Brian Tollberg (1-5) broke a 1-1 tie and gave Jamey Wright (1-1) a victory in his second start of the season.

Wright allowed one run and six hits in six innings. He was helped by double plays in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as San Diego lost its fourth straight and seventh in eight games.

        Diamondbacks 14, Dodgers 3

PHOENIX — Shawn Green tied a major league record with his fifth homer in two games but Los Angeles could muster little else as Curt Schilling became the majors' first nine game winner.

Green, who homered a record-tying four times during a 6-for-6 performance at Milwaukee on Thursday, hit a solo shot in the first off Schilling (9-1). It was the 25th time a player hit five homers in consecutive games.

Green tied another record with an eighth-inning single off reliever Mike Morgan. It gave him 25 total bases in two games, matching a mark set by Ty Cobb in 1925, and tied by Joe Adcock of the Milwaukee Braves in 1954.

Schilling allowed one run and six hits in seven innings. He walked none and struck out seven, increasing his major league leading strikeout total to 114.

Junior Spivey went 3-for-4, including a homer off Odalis Perez (4-3).

        Rockies 8, Giants 5

DENVER — Bobby Estalella homered and drove in four runs, and Todd Helton hit his 100th home run at Coors Field as Colorado beat San Francisco.

Estalella went 3-for-4 with two doubles and his fifth home run. Helton also doubled to back Denny Stark (3-0), who left after five innings with a 6-2 lead as the Rockies won their fourth straight. Jose Jimenez pitched the ninth for his 12th save.

Barry Bonds went 1-for-5 with two RBIs and Jeff Kent homered for San Francisco. Russ Ortiz (4-3) was roughed up for eight hits and six runs in five innings.
