M's Martinez transferred to 60-day DL

SEATTLE Mariners designated hitter Edgar Martinez was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Friday night because of his slow-healing hamstring injury.
Martinez, 39, had surgery April 13 to remove a ruptured tendon behind his left knee. He re-injured his hamstring two weeks ago while taking batting practice. He is eligible to come off the disabled list June 11.
It's bad news, but it really isn't, manager Lou Piniella said. All we're doing is insuring that he doesn't have to rush. We want Edgar ready in June, July, August and September. He will not feel the pressure of coming back too soon. ... We're going to need his bat down the stretch.
Martinez has been doing agility drills and light running and taking batting practice but is not able to run at full speed without pain. Piniella had said Thursday that Martinez could do a rehab assignment this weekend and rejoin the team as soon as Tuesday, but that timeline has been pushed back.
Martinez was frustrated after learning of the decision, but said he agreed with it.
Anything I have to do for the good of the team, he said. That's why we're all here, to help the team. We're all in it together. But this is not the way I wish. The more time I have to heal will help me.
He said he has not been able to run the same way since re-injuring the hamstring. He said he has slowed down his recovery the past few days to make sure he doesn't get hurt again.
I can't run at the speed required to play this game, he said.
The Mariners also optioned right-handed pitcher Justin Kaye to Triple-A Tacoma and purchased the contract of outfielder Chris Snelling from Double-A San Antonio.
Snelling, 20, was hitting .337 at San Antonio this season with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 22 games. He will join the team Saturday.
