Struggling Rijo won't lose spot
The Associated Press
Jose Rijo will keep his spot in the starting rotation - for now.
Rijo lasted only 3 2-3 innings Thursday, giving up six hits and four runs as he fell to 4-2 as a starter. He has failed to make it out of the fourth inning two times in his seven starts, and his ERA as a starter is 4.89.
If he continues to have trouble getting through the fourth, then we'll have to look at it, manager Bob Boone said. Right now, I'm enjoying it when he's out there.
Boone thinks Rijo, who has come back from five elbow operations, tends to tire fast and lose his control
When he gets tired, he loses command. You notice it pretty quick, he said.
Rijo retired the first two batters in the fourth, then walked Charles Johnson and pitcher Julian Tavarez, who has one hit this season. Luis Castillo followed with a decisive three-run homer.
I threw four fastballs in that inning, and I lost my rhythm on my slider, he said. My arm felt so great, I was throwing my slider too hard. I got away from my game plan.
