Reds chatter

Some fun facts from a team that has spent the past 22 days in first place

Enquirer staff and news services

Rookie watch: Austin Kearns keeps plugging along. He entered the weekend leading all National League rookies in hitting (.392), home runs (5), RBI (14), runs (17), total bases (52), on-base percentage (.524), slugging percentage (.658), extra-base hits (11) and hits (tied, 31).

We don't want to jinx the kid, but here are Reds Rookie of the Year winners:

       Frank Robinson — 1956
       Pete Rose — 1963
       Tommy Helms — 1966
       Johnny Bench — 1968
       Pat Zachry — 1976
       Chris Sabo — 1988
       Scott Williamson — 1999

Out(field)standing: The Reds are 18-9 since Kearns joined Adam Dunn and Juan Encarnacion in the outfield.

Arms race: The Reds' team ERA in the four-game sweep of the Brewers was 1.18 (five earned runs in 38 innings). They entered Friday with the 5th-best ERA in the NL at 3.28.

At home on road: The Reds have won five of six road series — and have three times won four straight away from Cinergy — basically without hitting a lick. The Reds entered Friday batting only .227 (147-648) and scoring only 3.8 runs per game.

How have they done it? Pitching. They entered Friday with a 2.19 team ERA (172.1 IP, 42 ER).

Stat corner: The Reds' record when:
       Score first — 19-3
       Opp. score first — 6-12
       Outhit opp — 17-3
       Outhit by opp — 7-11
