Surgery to sideline O's Segui 10-12 weeks

BALTIMORE First baseman/designated hitter David Segui will be sidelined 10 to 12 weeks after he has surgery on his sore left hand, and he isn't happy that it took the Baltimore Orioles three weeks to arrive at that conclusion.
Segui will have surgery Tuesday to repair what the team called torn cartilage and a damaged tendon.
I always knew what it was, Segui said Friday night. I always knew what I had to do to it, too.
Segui, who was injured while sliding April 26 in Kansas City, disputed the club's claim of tendon damage. But he admitted that the operation is a necessary first step toward recovery.
I wanted to have it fixed. . . . It's not something I look forward to, said Segui, who was hitting .263 with two home runs and 16 RBI.
Since the injury, which occurred in a home-plate collision with Royals catcher Brent Mayne, Segui and the Orioles have differed over the severity of the injury and the course of treatment.
Last week, after Segui said he was told surgery was needed to repair a torn tendon, the club had him re-examined and reclassified his injury as a bruised tendon with ligament damage.
TRADE: Bryan Rekar, who appeared in 31 games with the Rockies from 1995-97, was sent from Kansas City to Colorado in exchange for minor-league pitcher Eduardo Villacis.
Rekar was 0-2 with a 15.43 ERA in two starts for the Royals this season. Villacis was 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in 10 games with Single-A Asheville.
BREWERS: The team placed catcher Raul Casanova on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a torn ligament in his left elbow. He was injured when he hit Cincinnati catcher Corky Miller's shin guards in a head-first slide into home plate Thursday.
Casanova was hitting .184 with one home run and eight RBI in 31 games for Milwaukee.
Milwaukee pitcher Brian Mallette was suspended for three games and fined $1,000 by the commissioner's office, which said he intentionally threw at Cincinnati's Austin Kearns in a game May 8. Brewers manager Jerry Royster said there would be an appeal.
CANSECO CLAIMS: Jose Canseco says 85 percent of major-league players are taking steroids.
There would be no baseball left if they drug-tested everyone today, he said Friday during an interview with Fox Sports Net.
Canseco, who announced his retirement earlier in the week, refused to say if he took steroids. During an interview with The Associated Press on Friday, Canseco refused to answer questions about steroid use, saying he would give details in the book he is writing.
Basically what it's going to be is the true story of my life good and bad, the ups pand downs, Canseco said. I'll name names and discuss basically everything and everybody involved in it.
A's: Right-handed pitcher Cory Lidle was to be placed on the 15-day disabled list after Friday's game due to inflammation in his right shoulder. He is 1-5 with a 5.24 ERA this season.
INDIANS: Pitcher C.C. Sabathia was robbed at gunpoint early Friday morning at a downtown Cleveland hotel by a group of men, who stole his necklace, earrings and wallet.
It's a life-altering situation, a shaken but uninjured Sabathia said. It was totally my fault. There's nobody to blame but me.
Indians assistant general manager Neal Huntington said Sabathia and a cousin went back to the Marriott Hotel with a group of people they had just met at a nightclub. As they were getting ready to leave, two or three men pulled guns, Huntington said. Sabathia called hotel security after the men left and later contacted the Indians to tell them what happened.
Cleveland police spokeswoman Denise Reeves said a police report had not yet been filed and details of the case were still sketchy.
I can confirm that he was the victim of an aggravated robbery, Reeves said.
RANGERS: Texas activated Juan Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list. Gonzalez, who hit .250 in seven games with the Rangers this season, was out since April 10 because of torn muscle fiber between the thumb and index finger on his right hand.
