Brewers 6, Cubs 2

        MILWAUKEE — Glendon Rusch pitched seven strong innings, and rookie Alex Sanchez hit a bases-loaded triple as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 Friday night to win a matchup of the NL's worst teams.

        The Brewers (13-29) have won just four of 12, and all four have come against the Cubs (13-26), who have dropped a season-high eight consecutive games.

        Rusch (3-3) gave up two runs on six hits and improved to 5-1 lifetime against the Cubs. He also defeated Chicago at Wrigley Field last week.

        Sanchez, who drew manager Jerry Royster's ire Thursday for failing to run out a bunt that led to an easy double play, cleared the bases and gave Milwaukee a 4-0 lead when he lined a fastball from Matt Clement (1-3) into right-center for a standup triple with one out in the fifth.

        Diamondbacks 12, Phillies 9

        PHOENIX — Erubiel Durazo homered three times and drove in nine runs — the most in the majors since Boston's Nomar Garciaparra had 10 RBIs against Seattle at Fenway Park on May 10, 1999.

        Playing his second game of the season since coming off the disabled list, Durazo hit three two-run homers following singles by Luis Gonzalez. He had a chance to tie the major league record of four home runs, matched 15 days earlier by Seattle's Mike Cameron, but hit a three-run double in the eighth. The nine RBIs were an Arizona record.

        Eddie Oropesa (2-0) won, and Byung-Hyun Kim got four outs for his 12th save. Rheal Cormier (1-4) was the loser.

        Mets 13, Padres 4

        SAN DIEGO — Mike Piazza hit a grand slam to surpass 1,000 RBIs, and Edgardo Alfonzo started an around-the-horn triple play a triple play on a fifth-inning grounder to third by Wiki Gonzalez. Second baseman Roberto Alomar turned it with his throw to Mo Vaughn at first.

        Piazza's 13th career slam, and first since July 18, 2000, highlighted an eight-run seventh inning and sent the Mets to their fourth straight win following a 1-8 slide.

        San Diego made five errors. Steve Trachsel (3-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings to defeat Jason Middlebrook (0-1), who in his first start of the season gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings.

        Braves 4, Rockies 2

        DENVER — Tom Glavine (6-2) allowed two runs — one earned — and six hits in 6 2-3 innings for his 230th victory, moving past Luis Tiant and Sam Jones for 53rd place on the career list. Glavine, who has lost just four of his last 31 starts, also hit an RBI single.

        John Smoltz pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

        John Thomson (5-3) allowed four runs and nine hits in seven innings and walked four after not allowing a free pass for a stretch of 80 batters. He had been 3-0 in his previous four starts. to lose for the first time in five starts.

        Dodgers 8, Expos 5

        LOS ANGELES — Eric Karros hit a two-run homer, and Marquis Grissom added a solo shot for Los Angeles, which broke open a close game with a four-run sixth highlighted by Adrian Beltre's two-run double.

        Hideo Nomo (3-5) gave up three runs, six hits and five walks in six innings, and Eric Gagne pitched the ninth for his 14th save. Tony Armas (5-4) allowed six runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings.

        Giants 9, Marlins 3

        SAN FRANCISCO — Pinch-hitter Tom Goodwin hit a tiebreaking two-run single off Ryan Dempster (2-4) in the seventh and Tsuyoshi Shinjo added a grand slam in the eighth against Braden Looper.

        Russ Ortiz (4-2) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, and Robb Nen got four outs for his 13th save, sending Florida to its fourth loss in five games.
