Mets turn triple play against Padres
The Associated Press
SAN DIEGO The New York Mets, who have the second-worst fielding percentage in the majors, turned a triple play against the San Diego Padres in the bottom of the fifth inning Friday night.
With runners on first and second, Wiki Gonzalez hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo, who took two steps to the bag to force Deivi Cruz.
Alfonzo threw to second baseman Roberto Alomar to force Sean Burroughs, and Alomar completed the triple play by throwing to first baseman Mo Vaughn.
Gonzalez didn't appear to be running full speed until about two-thirds of the way up the line, when he suddenly picked up the pace, but it was too late.
The Mets led the majors with 43 errors going into Friday's games, and their .973 fielding percentage was just above Detroit, which had the worst at .972.
It was the ninth triple play in Mets history, and the first since Aug. 5, 1998, against San Francisco.
It was the ninth triple play turned against the San Diego, the first since Tony Gwynn hit into one on July 17, 1995, against Cincinnati.
