        • The bats: The Cardinals are second in the NL in hitting. Jim Edmonds is having a good (.339, nine homers, 28 RBI) year, and Fernando Vina (.307), Albert Pujols (.280, five homers, 19 RBI) and J.D. Drew (.302, six homers, 19 RBI) make the top of the lineup tough.

        • The rest: The Cardinals took two of three from the Reds last weekend, capping the series by coming back from an 8-0 deficit to win 10-8. The Cardinals have had two starters — Williams and Stephenson — come off the disabled list since then. The Cards were off Thursday after sweeping three from the Chicago Cubs.
