Reds win fourth straight

Sweep Brewers with 2-1 win in 11 innings

MILWAUKEE — Todd Walker's RBI single off Mike DeJean in the 11th inning gave the Reds a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee Thursday afternoon and a four-game sweep of the Brewers.

Gabe White (2-1) pitched a perfect 10th for the victory and Danny Graves pitched a perfect 11th for his 14th save in 18 chances.

The Reds beat the Brewers for the seventh time in 11 days.

With two outs in the 11th, Austin Kearns doubled off the wall in left field. DeJean (0-2) then walked Adam Dunn intentionally and Aaron Boone unintentionally, loading the bases for Walker.

Brewers right-hander Ben Sheets took a two-hitter into the ninth but surrendered a leadoff homer to Sean Casey on an 0-2 pitch that tied the game at 1. Casey's homer, his second of the season, was the Reds' first hit since Corky Miller led off the third with a single.

“It's the best victory of the year for us,” Walker said. “Ben Sheets did an outstanding job. He was tough, and for us to pull out a win today based on the way things were going, is pretty incredible.

“But we've found ways to win these games all year long. It's been a special ride for us so far.”

Before the ninth, Sheets had been a one-man show, collecting two hits and driving in the Brewers' only run with his first career double.

Sheets walked three and struck out a career-high nine batters in 8 1-3 innings.

“Ben Sheets pitched great and had great stuff,” Casey said. “We were just hoping to get that one opportunity where we could get one out of the park or get a walk and a rally going. And I was fortunate to hit a home run in the ninth.”

Reds starter Chris Reitsma allowed four hits in seven innings.

Alex Ochoa led off the fifth with a double off Reitsma and advanced on Jose Hernandez's groundout. After Raul Casanova was walked intentionally, Sheets doubled to break a scoreless tie.

Casanova, the Brewers' slowest runner, was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base on Sheets' first career extra-base hit. Casanova hyperextended his left elbow on the play and was replaced by backup catcher Paul Bako.

The only thing that got the crowd excited early on was Jerry Royster's first ejection since taking over as Milwaukee's manager on April 18.

Royster was tossed along with first baseman Richie Sexson by home plate umpire Doug Eddings in the fourth inning.

Sexson wasn't happy about a called third strike and let Eddings know about it. Royster ran from the dugout and got between the umpire and his player and was leading Sexson away when Eddings tossed him.

Royster then spun around in disbelief at Eddings' quick ejection and hollered at the umpire, who quickly tossed the manager.

Sexson was replaced at first base by Lenny Harris and bench coach Cecil Cooper took over the manager's duties.

In the sixth, Reds center fielder Juan Encarnacion was tossed after saying something to Eddings after he struck out swinging.

Just before Encarnacion was ejected, Eddings warned the Reds' dugout about comments that were directed toward him for his calls of pitches. Encarnacion was replaced by Reggie Taylor.

Royster was steamed about rookie Alex Sanchez failing to run out a bunt to third base in the eighth that led to a double play when Aaron Boone alertly let the ball bounce, then threw to first, where Sheets was holding.

“That was a heads-up play on their part and a bonehead play on our part,” Royster said.

Notes: Dunn had his first career sacrifice bunt in the seventh. ... Sheets suffered back spasms while running to first base last week in Chicago, but he caught a break with a rainout Saturday, which gave him extra time to work out the kinks.
