MLB: Stottlemeyer on DL
The Associated Press
PHOENIX Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Todd Stottlemyre, unable to bounce back between regular turns in the rotation, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.
The move was retroactive to Thursday, the day after he allowed six runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings of a 7-1 loss to the New York Mets.
Stott has had a myriad of physical problems the last two or three years, manager Bob Brenly said. Unfortunately, he has never been able to fully strengthen that right shoulder from all the injuries, and it was getting harder and harder for him to prepare between starts.
In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks recalled left-handed reliever Greg Swindell from a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Tucson and activated him from the 15-day DL.
Brenly said Brian Anderson, the starter Saturday night against the New York Mets, and Miguel Batista would remain in the rotation along with Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling and Rick Helling.
Stottlemyre (0-2) sat out last season because of a nerve injury in his right shoulder, which required surgery. In 1999 he began and ended the season in the rotation but missed three months because of a torn right rotator cuff.
The next year, he hurt his right elbow early, played in only 18 games and had elbow and hernia surgery Sept.26, 2000. The nerve went dormant the following spring, and Stottlemyre had the labrum operation that kept him out.
He said he was feeling some tightness in his triceps but wasn't injured. The problem was not being able to regain the endurance required to excel in the majors.
I haven't been recovering all year, Stottlemyre said. I've built my arm strength just pitching on game day, because the times in between that I've thrown since spring training have been so limited that I can't get the work in.
INDIANS: The swelling around outfielder Milton Bradley's left eye has improved, and the team said his double vision has minimized. Bradley broke an orbital bone near his eye when he got hit by a ball while trying to make a catch earlier in the week.
TWINS: Shortstop Cristian Guzman returned to the lineup Saturday after sitting out five games because of inflammation behind his left kneecap. Guzman, an All-Star last season, has struggled to a .211 batting average while playing through the soreness.
ATHLETICS: The team activated infielder Randy Velarde from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Mike Colangelo to Triple A-Sacramento. Velarde, who had been on the 15-day disabled list since April 5 because of a broken left hand, was in the A's lineup Saturday night.
